No Sound with Swap Trick on Sega Saturn

Post by loqus4 »

I'm trying to figure out why none of music files will play when I do the swap trick on my saturn (Model 2). For example in panzer dragoon I can play it, and all the sound effects will be fine, but there will be no music.

A little background:
I've tried burning bin/cue format discs, iso/mp3 discs, and iso/wav where I have converted the mp3s to wav files and all have the same problem.

When I play original copies on my saturn the sound works fine.

I've tested all these backups by sticking them in my computer and running them with SSF and the sound works fine there.

Any ideas? Thanks for your help.

Easy. Your legit disc during the swap needs as many CDDA music tracks on it as the copied game has. Basically, during the swap process, the system reads the TOC to figure out how many music tracks there are, among other things. If your legit game has fewer or no CDDA music tracks, it wont play any in the copied game, because the entire point of the swap trick is to distract the machine while you change a disc.

Use a cheap legit game as a swap disc like Virtual Fighter 2 or something else with a lot of music tracks.

Also games that use sequenced music will play fine regardless.

I tried some other original disks and it turns out the music actually wasn't working on originals either. I played with the lens cable some and now it works fine for both backups and originals, so problem solved.

First of all, I apologize for the necro-bump, but a few hours of google-fu turned me to this page and is the CLOSEST I've found to my issue.

I have a chipped Sega Saturn, and putting in the burned games works, however like the person above only sound effects play. Testing the CD in an emulator works just fine, and normal game discs work (though the only one I have to test that with is Bug).

Is this more likely a CD Lens issue, like possibly the ribbon cable? Or something more troubling like a failing disk drive?

EDIT: Forgot to mention, every Capcom game I've attempted (Megaman X4, 8, Street Fighter Zero 3) works just fine. I feel like this would have SOMETHING to do with it but I'm not sure if its just a possible format issue that for some reason allows the emulator to read the audio but not the system.

Grumpus, (or anyone)
Did you find a solution to your problem? I am having the exact same issue as well!
