Flashback 2013

Post by Frag Mortuus »

Have you all played this yet? I played through the first stage and I'm unsure if I like it. The physics are EXTREMELY floaty. If a ledge isn't directly above you and you jump up to grab it, the game with pull you towards it, a running jump lets you clear nearly the entire screen, and it just feels off overall. It is definitely not tight like the original. Also, the levels are redesigned, which I don't like. The narrative is corny, the main character has a cliche attitude and now there is a leveling system. But, the graphics are pretty.

I don't know why they thought it was necessary to implement all of these changes. If they would have left the entire underlying code intact and just updated the graphics I would have be ecstatic. I'm not saying it's bad, because I've enjoyed it so far. It's just not what I was expecting.

Oh, well. I don't think it's worth the asking price at all. But, it'll be worth buying on a Steam sale.

With video reviews and playthroughs pretty much being the norm nowadays it's getting harder to stumble upon a game by means of pure buying impulse

In my best Mr.Burns impression:

These new fiddily fangle dangled "remasters" are hogwash. You can't reinvent the monocle and not expect a lack of foresight. Orville and Wilbur had it right the first time but sods continue to ruin perfection. Bunch of poppy cock if you ask me.

They should have just tweaked that GBA sequel that got cancelled and put that out instead. The voice acting alone looks like an instant turn off to me. A shame, I totally loved the original, and its vagueness in a Metroid kind of way was something I really loved about it. Great art direction too.

I wish I could think of a pseudo 2D/3D styled game like this or Shadow Complex that I can actually compliment art/graphics wise... this crap never leaves an impression on me compared to sprites.
