 So after working my ass off for the past month to triple my stats and improve my overall performance/knowledge, I was let go tonight. They didn't even give me until the end of my Performance Period. I even met the requirements on this stupid little paper in front of me. They just decided to go ahead and fire everybody on a Performance Plan tonight without warning. Even the supervisors were pissed off.

Anybody know any Linux Administration jobs anywhere in the Houston Area? I have 3 days to find a job here before my lease is up and I'm forced to move back to Louisiana.

This fucking sucks.

Thanks. It was completely unexpected and caught me off-guard. I know I've been crying about this impending doom on the forums, but the past few days have been nothing but my Supervisors talking me up and telling me how much I've improved and how great I was doing. Just yesterday he said that he's never let anyone go for performance alone and there's no way they'd fire me with how high I managed to get my ticket count. Dude almost hugged me when he walked me out to the car. Told him that would be weird so we just shook hands.

Moving back might be my only option. The lease is up on this apartment, and I barely have enough in savings to make it here for two more months. I'm applying to as many jobs as possible, but I can't sign another lease if I can't land a job soon. At least back home we have family to fall back on. Here... I have nothing. It's all up to me, and I've already screwed up enough to put my kid at risk. I may come back to Houston eventually since there's so much opportunity here. Just can't risk it now.

Thanks guys. My emotions are all over the place right now and I have no idea how I feel. I've just been pumping out application after application to every job opening that has "Linux" in the titles all night long.

:D The amount of emails I got from pissed off administrators is outstanding. I'm not even sure how some of them got my email. Everybody is raising hell at work trying to get them to reconsider, but I don't think they will. Unfortunately everyone's complaints are falling on deaf ears, because the ears of the ones who controlled my fate aren't even in this state.

Sorry to read about your layoff. Maybe hit other types of jobs too? I think you are limiting your capabilities by flagging just Linux openings.

Jinx,

Ask the administrators who are on your side for letters of recommendation to go along with your cover letter and resume. Build a case of why you should be hired.

Done. Thanks dood! Both my direct supervisor and my "sensei" are typing up letters for me. I wouldn't have even thought about that.

I understand I may have to settle on another job temporarily, but it's a tough pill to swallow after fighting so hard to get into this career path. There's still tons of opportunities in this area so I'm not ready to go back to Best Buy just yet.
