This is one of the best threads in any game forum. Seeing all these kids playing retro games makes me so happy.

Huge achievement made today!

I showed my daughter "back", "forward", "jump", and "spin" (funny how that works for both Mario and Sonic). She navigated to Yoshi and jumped on his back all by herself!

After she got bored with Mario, she grabbed my Dreamcast controller and started saying "Sega", "Dreamcast", and "Sonic!". So I hooked it up and let her play for a bit.

She's playing Super Mario World at about the same age I first played it.

That kinda blows my mind a little.

I didn't have an NES until I was 3, but I vaguely remember playing on somebody's Atari 2600 a lot before that.

If my son or daughter ever said that i would probably start to cry. You have a good daughter Jinx, she knows who's the best. :D

I always felt that 16-bit games were much more engaging for kids than 31-bit/current generation games because it was much more simpler to handle controls. Forward or back, and there is a jump button... that is it. Also the cartoony nature of 16-bit era games and their catchy tunes are probably much more attractive to them than the current brown FPS shooters.

True. 16-bit games had limited color palettes, but the developers always strove to make them more colorful. Modern games have millions of possible color choices, and developers choose palettes of grey and brown. How dull.
