I guess it just shows that the difficulty curve for certain shmups varies from person to person...

Re: How Is Your SNES Gaming Going?
I always thought that Axelay and Darius Twin were two of easiest shmups on the SNES. Conversely, I always considered U.N. Squadron and Super EDF near impossible...

Re: How Is Your SNES Gaming Going?
Axelay takes some getting used to but then it's not so bad.
Re: How Is Your SNES Gaming Going?
Axelay -- no problem
(screen from final boss, one credit)
Firepower 2000 -- gets easier as you play it more. Ending screen from a recent playthrough
Imperium -- goodness that's tough. Ack is doubling down!
If you want even more, try Strike Gunner STG. Be warned, stages are a bit long.

Admittedly it's been a while since I last tried Darius Twin. Axelay's horizon is what really kills it for me. I think the use of Mode 7 is incredible and does lend an impressive aspect of flying around the curvature of the planet, but it really bothers me to look at.prfsnl_gmr wrote:I always thought that Axelay and Darius Twin were two of easiest shmups on the SNES. But I feel Super EDF is quite easy compared to many of the other hori shmups I've played. Just use the homing weapons in a revolving arrangement for the extra defense they provide(and then switch to the one that locks them onto an enemy for boss fights) up until the final level and then switch to something with high damage capabilities. The hardest part of the game is the final boss, and it's because his projectiles are so difficult to dodge. Things get a bit easier once he's spitting exploding brains, and considerably easier once he attacks you with eyes. I also suggest using something that has a big explosion, as it causes slowdown which helps with avoiding at least some of his attacks.
ExedExes, thanks! I feel like I'm finally getting a feel for this genre. I still think I'm terrible at it, but it feels good to get through another one. Imperium's not as tough once you figure out the right tools for the job, which for me mostly consisted of 3/4 max speed so I could manuever effectively, and mainly switching between the big lasers and the orange waves for weapons. And the bosses generally work in specific patterns, so once you figure them out, they pose much less of a challenge. Strike Gunner looks like a lot of fun!

I've only played it once, and you went and completed it.Ack wrote:ExedExes, thanks! I feel like I'm finally getting a feel for this genre. Re: How Is Your SNES Gaming Going?
You guys are seriously inspiring me to start plowing ahead on the few shmups I have... only to get insanely frustrated after a couple hours and put the games away again for months
Is there a complete list of SNES (NTSC and PAL) and SFC shmups out there? Is Cybernator considered a shmup? Mecha-shmup?

There are a couple. I like this Wikipedia one, though I don't agree with everything on here:s1rweeze wrote:You guys are seriously inspiring me to start plowing ahead on the few shmups I have... only to get insanely frustrated after a couple hours and put the games away again for months![]()

And here's the SNES page on shmups.com:

And which SHMUPS do you have? Some of the guys here can offer tips and tricks, and we're always good for moral support!

Just to follow up on this, average loose cart price for EB is down from nearly $200 to $130. Hooray?s1rweeze wrote:One month is a small sample size but it looks like the VC release of EarthBound may be having an impact. Still getting 4 sales a day but down $40 on average. That's pretty significant.

That's funny, Axelay is one of the harder ones for me but I found Super EDF pretty managableprfsnl_gmr wrote:I always thought that Axelay and Darius Twin were two of easiest shmups on the SNES. Conversely, I always considered U.N. Squadron and Super EDF near impossible...![]()

Re: How Is Your SNES Gaming Going?
Yeah, UN Squadron and Super EDF are hard but manageable. Axelay just irritates me, for some reason.
