If Haijime no Ippo jumps the shark, it's not during the first series which should be enough to tide you over for a while. I LOVE IT. And even though it isn't a team sport, the character relations with the other boxers at Ippo's gym are a big part of it - I RECOMMEND IT! (Okay, it's also the only sports anime I've seen, so maybe my perspective is a bit skewed.)

I've heard that Cross Game and The Big Windup are both really good baseball shows. There's also one I'm curious about called Taisho Baseball Girls, which looks out of the ordinary because its about girls playing baseball in the 1920s.

Ok I'll give it a try. But you should also check Slamdunk. The character relations are really well done and it's also funny as hell.

And something grounded (or close to I guess) in reality please like Slamdunk, not something like American Football DragonBall Z (Eyeshield 21) or One Piece Football (Inazuma Eleven).
Bamboo Blade is one of my favorite high school setting shows. It's about a high school kendo team! Kendo is awesome too. Must watch.

Cross Game is good if you like baseball. The games are fairly long and while there are some ridiculously good players everything makes sense. No super attacks or anything.

Similarly, perhaps Mushishi. Could also try Serial Experiments Lain. For some shorter watches, might check out Makoto Shinkai's stuff. I'd suggest 5 Centimeters Per Second.

I'm not much of an anime fan these days but my step-daughter's complaining last week about the lack of awesome female lead characters in the books she reads and shows she watches made me break out my old The Slayers DVDs.

I forgot how great this show is.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Sounds really interesting, and at just 26 episodes it's exactly what I'm looking for :D Thanks

This looks pretty good. I'll check it out, thanks! It's cheap too.

Valkyrie-Favor wrote:I read the Rosario to Vamprie manga a while ago. A few chapters were really, really good - mostly the comedy ones. Most of it was average and some of it was truly terrible. I guess I kept reading because it promised greatness in the beginning. The dual-personality Moka was cool, and for some reason I thought that would be the series' main focus. I thought it would be about how Tsukune would deal with the fact he was loving a fake personality, or monsters and humans living together, or something mildly interesting like that.

Imagine if Tsukune had died of anemia and Moka had to live with it. That sounds like a good story to me.

Right now the manga is nearing the end, it just keeps getting more and more ridiculous and at this point I'm reading it for kitsch value. Unbelievably silly. I don't think the anime made it very far into the original story though, so you might not see any of the inanity I'm talking about. Season II has absolutely nothing to do with the manga, so I never bothered to watch it.

Actually...I might check it out now that you've reminded me. Maybe it'll be more interesting than the source material.
The second season if I remember correctly really got into the whole issue of him loving a fake personality at least towards the end :P. Its been forever since I watched it though so I might be mistaken.

I watched the first episode of Rosario to Vampire season 2 today. I recommend everybody see it, because it's unbelievable. This episode embodies almost everything that is wrong with harem shows. I like the good ones, but...how many of those are there? I think you could count them on one hand.

Panty shots number in the dozens and the eyecatch is just Moka flying around the screen naked. Our introduction to Tsukune's harem from last season begins with a crowd of nameless schoolgirls groping all the named schoolgirls. Later the named schoolgirls open their shoe lockers, all of which are filled with fan letters because they're just that unbelievably sexy. Moka, being the sexiest (the entire school agrees on this) nearly drowns in them, and the one she decides to open is a death threat. Brilliant setup for a drama, right?

Also, Moka's breasts and butt grow a few sizes when she takes off her holy seal. This is, of course, combined with a panty shot.

The ending theme is awesome though. "Disco lady! Deep emotion! Explosive sexy beauty!"

I've been loving Slayers. It's such a fun show.

I don't know how old she is, but if you're looking for other things for her to possibly watch with strong female lead characters there's always Nausicaa, Spirited Away, R.O.D., and Sailor Moon to consider (assuming you can track down those last two cheaply).

There's also Utena, but not knowing how old she is, a lot of that show might go over her head (Hell, a lot of that show goes over my head  .)
