No, it's not an amazing game, but it's extremely unique in premise and is an essential buy for anyone who enjoys games as well as music which should be every one of you. It's got online scoreboards, achievements, and other Steam functionality.
AudioSurf is $2.49 right now. Get off your asses.

Whoa, those guys at Valve sure do like to celebrate, seems like every time they do anything of note (or even something as simple as a shopping cart) they cut a game's price down to hardly anything, plus there's the weekend deals. I already have Audiosurf, shame I can't really think of anyone who doesn't already have it. I'll be sure to spread the word where I can though, Audiosurf was a steal at $10 and there's no reason not to get it at this price. It's actually currently the cheapest game on Steam, even cheaper than Geometry Wars and Bullet Candy, both at $3.99.
I hear a lot of people saying Left 4 Dead is overpriced for what it is and should have been in some new Orange Box type thing... I'm perfectly fine with paying $45-50 for a game that looks awesome coming from a company that regularly tosses out games for next to nothing.

Definately a really fun game. Especially when you bust out some Boston.

I admit I had been spoiled by Amplitude to really enjoy this.. I mean I wish the algorithm could break the song down to more basic elements but it's practically impossible with today's technology.

Have a look a this:

The technology is here. Whether a video game company is willing to licence the tech I don't know, but it's definately possible.
There was a thread on here about a year back discussing this exact thing.
I have coded a similar proof of concept with Max/MSP. One that uses Fast Fourier Transforms to separate audio in the frequency domain. Theoretically seperating audio files into their seperate tracks. It takes some skill and tweaking of my software to do and the results aren't as crystal clear as a master would be but it works. It's good enough for taking certain samples or making a decent enough accapella for electronica.

That sounds amazing! I hope someone picks it up for rhythm games!
