ipod touch 1st gen

Post by samsonlonghair »

I recently acquired a first gen ipod touch. This is my first ios device. I updated it to ios 3.1.3. Then I connected it to the app store to find that most apps require a higher version of ios than this device supports.

Basically, I'm looking for suggestions for games and apps that run on a first gen ipod touch on ios 3.1.3 or lower.

Another question, can I download older versions of these apps that have since been updated? For instance, tunein radio once supported ios 3.1.3 but the current version requires ios 5.0 at minimum.

Jailbreak it and get VShare.

You cannot download older versions of apps from the App Store. For a device that old, jailbreaking may be your only option to make it fun.

I just Googled, "Vshare" and saw this:
Appvv.com wrote:Designed for iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch.
One touch to install, update or delete apps.
vShare make everything become easy for you.

Your device need
1. IOS 4.3 or above
2. Jailbreak
3. Installed AppSync in Cydia
So It looks like my device will not run Vshare. I cannot go above ios 3.1.3.

Does anyone know if jailbreaking would even be fruitful on this device?

Well, it's probably too slow to do much besides play music and run a calendar. Not sure there's a point to jailbreaking.

Apple did make an announcement recently that they will let folks download older versions of apps that are the most recent for their particular version of iOS. Not sure if they're willing to go back as far as 3.x, though...

I have a 1st generation iPod Touch too...and it's really only good for a couple things:

Playing music
Listening to Pandora
Checking your email
Checking the weather

The problem being the original CPU was underclocked at 400 MHz and only had 128MB of ram. Newer iOS devices are much more powerful...

That's too cool. I'll boot up my old ipod touch when I get home from work today. I'm real excited to hear that.

I couldn't say no to a free ipod. Would you?

I really appreciate your input MetalJ. Have you gotten any use of the remote function?

So here's an update in case anybody gives a darn:

I picked up an ipod dock with audio out port at a discount store for four dollars. Now my first-gen ipod touch is a dedicated pandora player for my home stereo. I have also loaded a few of my favorite mp3s onto this device, but the paltry 8GB of storage limit my options where that's concerned.

I tried to use Apple's remote control function, but that won't work on a first-gen either. It's a shame because I would have bought myself an appleTV just to use this ipod as a remote. No go.

All in all, I'm happy. I have a pandora player for four dollars. It works well with my home stereo system. I think this is the best I can do with this device. If anyone should stumble across this thread in the future after googling, "what good is a fist-gen ipod touch," you'll know the answer.
