Cleaning manuals?

Post by Teh Lurv »

Yesterday I picked up a few NES manuals I needed from a yard sale. The manuals were stored inside a dusty, dirty box with a few bits of mouse poop at the bottom. ::bleh!:: The manuals themselves fortunately didn't appear to have been pooped on, but they have that layer of dust/dirt and are bent out of shape.

Aside from hitting them with an air can and flattening them out, I don't really have any other ideas on how to clean them. Considering where they'd been, I'd like to disinfect them, but I don't want to ruin them either. Anyone have any suggestions?

When my parent's basement flooded, the restoration company that the insurance company hired managed to fix all the photo albums and books that got destroyed by using a freeze-drying process. It might be a bit extreme, but I was amazed at what they managed to do vs my efforts with suede cloths and the freezer. Might be something to look into.

Some air purifiers have UV lights in them, to kill mold and whatnot. Maybe you've got something there.
