PS3 sales reach new low in Japan News

  1. PSP: 60,467
    Wii: 24,292
    DS: 22,965
    Xbox 360: 7,844
    PS2: 6962
    PS3: 3931
Sony has misunderstood its home turf seeing that Japanese gamers are unwilling/not ready for HD just yet (not to mention the inflated price tag).. I don't care about brand loyalty one bit but this is bad news if we are to anticipate more killer apps from the caught-off-guard Japanese dev houses. Now show me some more Japanese stuff for the 360 and I'll bite (MGS4 hopefully?)

I guess this helps explain why we're still seeing new development for the PS2 from Japanese companies.

if you ask me,
i think ps3 is a system released early
all the HD, blu-ray, and power in the system is not made for these years.
to prove my point, games are usually same quality or even better on the 360, which was released 1 year before and does not use HD discs.

technology in it is top notch, making it expensive while inferior technology like 360's is less expensive(see console price and why sony cant lower it any more) . The 360 is doing just fine, actually better than ps3. All this proves that sony made a system that is not needed for this era. I am not sure if it is going to pay off later in the future to release such system, or it will kill it early due to low sales.Maybe they should have done like the 360, release a system now , and when technology advances even more make another console. Sony seems to think they want to compete with the 360 AND its follower 720 or whatever they'll call it.

Up until now , its hard to see whats what is so special about sony hardware when 360 is just as good. No games really proves that you WANT the ps3.

If you ask me, i guess sony next playstation should be homestation.
A system where you can watch TV, download games and movies, like the living room center. Thats where its heading anyway. Its no more gaming console, it branched out and all that power maybe could be used somewhere else.

Except for Monster Hunter R or whatever it's called, there are harldy ever any PSP games in the top 20 sales in Japan which makes me wonder how many of all those PSPs are actually being used for anything but emulation and pirate PSP games.
 (FC, AVFC, NES, SFC x2, SNES, N64, GC x2, Wii x2)*(G&W x7, GB, GBpocket, GBASP, DS-L x2)
(GEN, SS x3, DC x3)*(PCE-Duo)*(Xbox:500GB)*(NGCDZ, NGPC)*(PS1, PStwo, PS3:160GB, PSP.3K)

Sony have always said the PS3 is in for the long haul and they want to get a 10 year lifespan out of it - the modern technology in the PS3 might not be necessary now, but we are reaching the limits of what DVD based media can handle (unless you're a fan of swaping discs all the time), so i'd imagine the benfit of blu-ray will be become more apparant in the next few years (like when FFXIII releases, all those HD cutscenes are probably going to make it a 4+ disc affair on 360, but a single blu-ray release on PS3).

This is the same situation as last generation, but in reverse. Last gen the PS2 was way in the lead and Xbox fans were bemoaning the all the crappy PS2 ports knowing that the Xbox could produce much better graphics, but wasn't given a chance to outside of exclusive titles. This time around though, the PS3 and 360 are very similar in terms of graphic output (and will remain that way until developers figure out how to get the most out of the Cell), it's the storage capacity of blu-ray that is beginning to make a difference - look at LittleBigPlanet for example, the graphics are nothing that couldn't be done on 360, but the 30gb's of preset items and textures contained within the game would require at least 3 DVD discs if Media Mollecule were to produce a 360 version.

You can pretty much do all that with the PS3 anyways - with PlayTV you can watch and record live TV to your PS3 HDD and with the PSN Store & Movie Store you can download games & movies. The PS3 is pretty much the ideal media center.

Just like what he said, sony first said the ps3 would be around for a long time. Im not worried about sony running off and hiding, im just worried that in 10 years from now we will see some REALLY crappy games, ie:

Need for Speed 47
BackDoor Bandet 7
Duke Didnt Nukem
Doomed to Doo

so forth so on.
Yep, I know im the one ya love to hate.

i think what is sony is doing is only natural

First lets think, lets see how much they beat their competition last generation?
A lot, it makes sense these people want playstation brand.

second, these people are STILL playing ps2(how many ppl still play original xbox or gamecube?) , so it made them think people want a system that lasts that long.

Third, last generation they won a lot because of DVD, so this generation they thought blu-ray will work.

fourth, the customers always are looking for the next tekken, need for speed, GT, god of war, etc..
How do you see sony doing wrong , all their decisions are logical.

What is NOT logical is nintendo.
When companies fight to say they have the better graphics calculating every pixel, the wii is not even HD, its hardly better than its system released back in early 2000!
After all these years, they decide their still won't even play DVD !!
All the big games like gears of war, god of war, GT, MGS, fable, halo 3 are on the competition system, yet the wii is mostly releasing remakes and selling old games on wiiware....
ITS THE SYSTEM SELLING MOST BY MARGIN

that needs explaining!!

not surprising as there isn't much to play on the damn thing. Mine is being used for dvds and if my local store would get any new blurays in....

Game wise I've almost caught up with the stuff so far released just need resistance games and heavenly sword. Played the demo of the new sega rpg which was pretty good. They need more games!

The PSP gets called out for this too, but I understand the argument even less with the PS3. In the 6 months or so I've had mine, there has been no shortage of outstanding releases (both exclusive and cross platform) to play. Since this summer alone, thhe system has seen 10+ games that earn a 85%+ from gamerankings.com:

Exclusives:
Metal Gear Solid 4
Little Big Planet
Resistance 2
Wipeout HD

Cross-Platform:
Grand Theft Auto 4
Bioshock
Far Cry 2
Fallout 3
Dead Space
Eternal Sonata
Madden 09
Bionic Commando Rearmed
Mega Man 9

That's a serious chunk of gaming, so I am not sure what "more games" you would want. Add in a healthy back catalog of earlier PS3 games, the full PS2 library, and Blu-Ray, and it is hard to go wrong with a PS3.
