Criminally Underrated/Overlooked Game Soundtracks
Re: Criminally Underrated Game Soundtracks
Good point. Hardly anyone bothers to rate game soundtracks for them to be underrated :P

Re: Criminally Underrated Game Soundtracks
Ristar's soundtrack is pretty amazing, if you ask me. It really pushes the Genesis' sound chip to its limits. It also does a pretty neat thing that if you listen to all the level tracks in order with no gaps in between the tracks, they all transition into each other.
Re: Criminally Underrated Game Soundtracks
Oh god yes, Ristar has some of the best music ever. In rambling around YouTube I ran across this:
Somebody remixed the Level 5-2 music with the instrumentation from Streets of Rage. It sounds like Teddy Riley got a hold of a Genesis and worked some New Jack magic on it.

My favorite song from the game is "Beyond Space" (the one that plays at the world completion screen). That scene is without a doubt my favorite moment in Genesis gaming. It's that good.
Re: Criminally Underrated Game Soundtracks
I wasn't gonna post here because I didn't want to just throw stuff I already threw out on other threads for the sake of posting, but since this is kind of an any game music goes sort of thing, that's cool. Plus, it's better for it to be all in one place. For me, I'll be doing mainly arcade games because it's one thing to have a great game but for the music to fully put you inside the game and to shut everything else off around you is special.
First, I own a game soundtrack. Some of the best music for one of the best racing games out there. I bought this from an eBay seller in Japan -

Scud Race, known to us in America as Sega Super GT, was one of the first racing games on their Model 3 hardware. I believe some of the Daytona USA staff also helped on this. The 4 tracks each have good music, these are extended versions --
Track 1
Track 2
Track 3
Track 4
I also have various one off tracks from my YouTube favorites list. Note that the entire soundtrack(s) of these games I'd also enjoy listening to and I feel they would be suitable for inclusion here, I'm just pointing out some highlights.
47th Street from Cadillacs & Dinosaurs. One of Capcom's best beatemups deserves a great soundtrack, and you'll hear this one TWICE in the game.
Stage 3 of Air Gallet. If you can make it to this stage, you'll be treated with not only an amazing background starting with a red sunset sky and then of the big city and more some neat graphics, you'll also get this music.
Setup theme from Super Off Road (SNES). Tim Follin of Software Creations brings us a take on the old Toyota jingle from the early 90s.
Serenity from Unreal Tournament 2004 (PC). The first time I heard this was on a custom designed map that used this stock music from the game, and it just fit the map so perfectly. Great track.
Area C from Shatterhand (NES). Natsume does it again with some more awesome music from an under-appreciated NES platformer. Compare with Shadow of The Ninja, more great music there.
Vision (Stage 3) from Rayforce. Taito's Zuntata music team represents here with a perfect theme that captures your ship upon re-entry into Earth's atmosphere and beginning its campaign there. In fact, I'll include a video that shows this entire stage, and you'll see what I mean.
Finally, another Sega racing soundtrack, Sega Rally 2. I believe this was just on the DC port, not sure of the arcade status.
M N F Some cheesy vocals, but for this game, it's awesome.
Night Groovin' This one you can only here during race replays, but it's still awesome to hear as you mess around with the camera.
King of Isle One good reason to play that series of courses on Time Trial. The other reason because Isle SS2 is the best track in the game.
That's only a few that I can find easily enough.

Lollipop Chainsaw
Lollipop Chainsaw is a bit of an underrated game, so I wonder if we can consider the soundtrack underrated as well. I love the fact that is has both traditional, video game compositions as well as licensed tracks, all of which are good. It's a nice fusion of styles too, pop, metal, indie, you name it and it's here. One of my favorite soundtracks of all time, easily.
Wet
Nice grindhouse soundtrack for a grindhouse game. The game itself was okay, but the soundtrack was excellent
And I can never find a vid for the song for this level so here's the level itself
Nice metal track that fits the stage perfectly, this is one of the game's best moments

Re: Criminally Underrated Game Soundtracks
I'm assuming those for Ristar, realize my first post in this thread? But I do agree, Ristar is probably the best OST for the Genesis/Mega Drive

THE 7TH MF'ING SAGA

Criminally underrated game with a criminally underrated soundtrack.
Unlike many JRPGs of the time, there are not many "in your face" type tracks contained within The 7th Saga OST. Most tracks are more sparse and atmospheric - which means they perfectly capture the mood of the desolate game world you travel through.
I don't believe an official soundtrack was ever released, so many of these song names may not match the official titles:
Island of Beore
Castle Music
World Map
Town of Guntz
