I recommend checking out "The First Quarter" by Steven Kent for the full story on the video game crash of the early 80s, particularly the chapter "We Tried To Keep From Laughing" (describing Nintendo's first attempts to sell the NES in the US.)General_Norris wrote:It wasn't. Although I see now your location is Madrid, Spain, so I should specify that I'm talking about the US (as is that book), not sure what the market looked like at that time worldwide

I simply find the "Nintendo saved videogames" mantra silly and misguided.

The US is where most of the world's best known videogame websites and Youtubers are based and they tend to project what happened here onto other markets.ZeroAX wrote:Nintendo saved the US console market, would be a better descriptions1rweeze wrote: I recommend checking out "The First Quarter" by Steven Kent for the full story on the video game crash of the early 80s, particularly the chapter "We Tried To Keep From Laughing" (describing Nintendo's first attempts to sell the NES in the US.). Arcade and Computer gaming was still doing fine, and the console market in Japan was about to kick off (thanks to them too of course, but also because of Sega, NEC ect.).

Makes sense. It's wrong, but it makes sense.BoringSupreez wrote: The US is where most of the world's best known videogame websites and Youtubers are based and they tend to project what happened here onto other markets.
When Ken Kutaragi dies it's going to be the Europeans' turn to say "the guy who saved/fixed console gaming died"

Re: Hiroshi Yamauchi Dies at 85.
It's my mistake for not specifying the US in the first place.

Put your differences aside, and focus on the point of this thread--the loss of a great man core to our hobby. Take the banter elsewhere!

What differences mate? We are just having a friendly discussion. Are we not allowed to even state differing opinions now?
