When online retailers mess up

Post by Jmenglan »

So I ordered one used copy of Metroid Prime 3 off of Amazon the other day, and the package came in today. I open it up and instead of one used game i find four sealed copies of the game instead! haha. Pretty good deal for 10.94 don't you think?

Someone out there is going to be pretty upset when they get their order for 4 new copies of Metroid Prime 3 and find only one used copy.

Interesting. Do you still have the invoice they included in the package? It'd be interesting to see if the ordering system messed up, or if when people were packing it they screwed up. Also, you mentioned it was a used copy, so I take it you purchased it from one of the sellers who use the Amazon system, as opposed to Amazon itself.

Honestly, I'd get back in touch with them about it. But that's just me.

Yeah, it was good of you to send them the email, as it lets them know that they screwed up in shipping. However, from a legal perspective you have no obligation to return the extra copies, even though you weren't charged for them. Amazon had an ordering bug several years ago that was dubbed the "Buy one, get one free Christmas". They sent out a notice to all affected customers to let them know that yes, they had a free item, and yes, they could keep the item. However, Amazon did offer to pay the shipping charges if anyone wanted to return their items. Legally, once the item is shipped it becomes the property of the customer, even if the item was shipped by mistake.
