I agree. I owned the game for fifteen years before I finally sat down and played through it because I couldn't stand the graphics and I disliked the controls. I'm just glad to have it out of the way so I don't have to go back ever again.
The basic Star Fox controls are terrible; you need config B. But I don't understand how you can not like the graphics. I'd say the 3D graphics in Star Fox hold up better than the 3D graphics in FFVII. Star Fox didn't have much to work with, so they did the best they could and came up with some unique looking stuff. FFVII falls into that generic "early 3D" look that tries to make things look "normal" and falls short.
I don't actually care for the Popeye arms of FFVII either. Early 3D is very jarring to me. At the time I was impressed, but it was primarily aimed at the FMVs and less at the actual game. And going back to that era, I'm far more interested in the look of games like Resident Evil, Bushido Blade, or even Virtua Fighter 2.

I'm really surprised they haven't done a modern HD remake of Final Fantasy 7 yet, one would think it would be easy money.

Not really. The gameplay is really dated. We don't mind that of course, but how many people do you think are willing to put up with random fights these days?

Also many of the sillier things in the game will just look too weird/bad in HD (like the robot cat riding a chansey to battle). Compare FF VII to the film Advent Children. They removed a lot of the goofyness from the game world.

imo that sucks but I know I'm not the main target audience for FF this kind of stuff. FF is trying too much to be all cool and badass and it lost a lot of what made it unique, and FF XV seems to be continuing the trend of turning FF into a CGI anime.

40 minutes? How long has it been since you fought him that way dude? I do it regularly and it takes maybe 3 or 4 minutes, tops.

Unless you're exaggerating to show how annoying the fight is, which is fair.

Maybe not 40 minutes, sure. But there's no doubt it took a bit longer than 3-4 minutes. The robot has an INSANE amount of health. And pretty much has a counter for like any other attack.

It's such a bummer. If any series needed a complete overhaul it's FF. Go nuts with the graphics and presentation like Windwaker did, re-invent some things, take a friggin chance for once.

Modern RPGs got no random fights any more? Thats one of the reasons I hate RPGs. Good to hear.

FF XII and FF XIII didn't have any and neither did Xenoblade. I know some JRPGs still do (resonance of fate springs to mind) but I think most of them have abandoned them.

The thing is the reason I minded them so much wasn't because of their random and interuptive nature, but because in the PS1 and PS2 era they took so long to load that the screen first fades out, the it loads a bit, and then we have introductory animations of the enemies and it all just get soooo tedious.

FF VI on the other hand features the same random battles but it literally takes 1-2 seconds to get them started so you are not wasting hours of gametime looking at the same battle introductions, over and over again, you are basically jumping right into the action.

The same could be said of overly elaborate and long casting/attack animations, but FF XIII fixed that by having the game be on autopilot

It'd probably just mean coming up with a consistent style for it. Most FF stuff has had more serious versions in concept art/character portraits/etc already. Some of the looks of it came out of necessity, to make something that was readable at a low detail level.

That being said, there are still random silly elements. Particularly in the online games (and usually involving moogles).

Yes xD. There is an island cult at some point and also the ending gets.....far out xD.

Anyway it's an AMAZING game and everyone should play it imo. It's short for a JRPG too :)
Just started Robotrek today. Everyone talks about "hidden gems" but this one truly is hidden, the real title is apparently "Slapstick" and that's much more fitting. I guess the powers-that-be in North America didn't think that would sell so they changed the title and made the cover art some generic sci-fi spaceship thing? And it still didn't sell. Which is a shame because this game is a lot of fun (once you get a grasp on how to do things)
