Re: What Made you Smile/What Ticked you off Today?
To my knowledge, no person on his or her death bed has uttered, "I regret getting so much education..."
College will open a lot of doors for you (or, more precisely, not going to college will close a lot of doors for you). If you go to college, receive a degree, and decide you want to spend your life flipping burgers or doing manual labor, nothing will stand in your way. If, on the other hand, you skip college, and later decide you want to do more than flip burgers or perform manual labor, you will be out of luck.
Also...you can work while you are in school. Many students are fully emancipated and financially independent when they go to college.
Finally, have you considered community college or technical school? If you do not want to pursue a four-year degree, those could be good choices for you.

The era that your granddad grew up is much different than today. Now a days you have college grads fighting to flip burgers. Jobs come and go but an education will stick with you no matter what.Forlorn Drifter wrote:if my Grandpa could make it through life with less than an eighth grade education, then I can make it through without a college education.

As someone who, in their later years of schooling, became entirely disgusted with school and became a D student, college is great. I'm loving every bit of it.Forlorn Drifter wrote: I'm really starting to think that I don't even want to go to college. I just want to go off somewhere and go to work.
So take that for what you will. College is a much different environment to high school.
Older. Not wiser.

Re: What Made you Smile/What Ticked you off Today?
Well, I have no plans for college since I haven't decided what to do with myself yet. I just can't lay down the money before I have a goal. Or before I even have the money. For that, my only options are going into debt or working menial jobs long enough to pay for a slip of paper that will allow me to work some other less menial job if I'm lucky. What a situation.
That said, I'm way more open to the idea than I was after finishing high school last year. I was so sick of school that knew I'd go insane if I didn't take a year break. It's been half a year and I feel I could begin studying again anytime. I think most people who are sick of school will eventually feel the same way.

Taking on college debt is a lot easier to do when living at home (or when you first get out on your own). Deciding you want to go to college after all once you're working full time and dealing with bills and your own place, it's a lot more difficult.
If not college, Forlorn, I think at least you should look at trade schools or something.

On the way home the kids wanted a treat so stopped at the gas station / meat market. Kids got a candy and I got T-bones for $7.99/lb - won't be able to enjoy them until tomorrow though - mom's b-day so dinner out tonight...

My Dad says I can stay at home as long as I wish, but I want out of this area. There is places I'll miss, but I'd do anything to get away from a lot of the stuff and a lot of the people here. I don't know where I'd go, but I know it isn't here. I also don't really like any of the colleges near here.AppleQueso wrote:Taking on college debt is a lot easier to do when living at home (or when you first get out on your own). I've thought about trade school, as I've really mulled over being a gas or motorcycle mechanic. But from what I can tell, mechanics generally make less than teachers, so that wouldn't really work for me.

Take a look elsewhere then. Look outside of Texas even, lots of people leave their hometowns for college. Find a place and stay at the dorms or something. I think a drastic shakeup and change of scenery (not to mention new types of people) would do you a ton of good anyway.Forlorn Drifter wrote:My Dad says I can stay at home as long as I wish, but I want out of this area. Re: What Made you Smile/What Ticked you off Today?
One of the things I really don't like about college though is that I'd have to stay in a dorm. That would drive me nuts, that many people that close. I've never shared a room, and haven't shared a bathroom in years, I don't think I could handle that. And, knowing my luck, I'd get a dorm with someone who doesn't speak English or is a complete douche.
I haven't looked out of state because it is more expensive. I couldn't afford a low end college here, let alone out of state.
