I can't believe it took me so long to stumble across it. It's a platformer reminiscent of old nes titles, except it's hard. Really really fucking hard. Like you will die 1000+ times more than likely on your first playthru.
But even with the difficulty, it's still incredibly enjoyable. There's save points every two screens or so, so dying doesnt mean that much to do again. And there are tie ins to other classc games, like a mega man level, castlevania level, tetris level, etc.
