I've noticed this with children's movies...the standard for a PG rating is way too low today. Back in 1974, Tobe Hooper limited the on-screen gore in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre in the hopes of obtaining a PG rating. I am also certain that many PG movies in the 1970s and early 1980s featured nudity, face melting, people having their hearts torn from their chests, etc. (People were apparently way cooler about that stuff back then...but, to be fair, the PG-13 rating was not created until 1984.) Today - as far as I can tell - a movie with any sort of conflict or "scary moments" automaticaly receives a PG rating (unless, of course, it is a Disney movie...in which case, anything goes).

Don't forget "Tobacco Use".

This.

I'll always crack a joke at a funeral because when I go I want people to remember what they enjoyed about me and enjoyed doing with me, not crying and feeling worse than they need be. Seriousness and sadness are a part, but I find it's appropriate to remember someone's memory by taking the time to just have fun the way they would have. Sometimes taking some joy in knowing that I had the chance to meet them and go out and do something that reminds me of them in a positive way is a very good way to positively deal with loss.

After all, everyone's going to kick it eventually. If we can't have a laugh at our own human mortality and everything that comes with it then we're taking life a bit too seriously.
I just want you to know, I was planning on tarring and feathering your body, then launching it over the Interstate with a catapult so we could put up a YouTube video about the Mothman.

I don't want people being miserable at my funeral, and I don't want a bunch of lies spoken either. There's no need to have it religious, or say I was an "outgoing/outstanding person". Jokes are more than welcome. Have a BBQ, have a party, just don't sit around crying over me.

Death hasn't ever bothered me too much, but I didn't have to deal with it as a kid. I usually have a sudden shock of realization that the person/pet is gone, but I then shove the feelings away and pay my respects every so often.

Funerals are for the living, and to remember the relationship you had with the person who passed. It's okay to joke and laugh at them. Depending on the company, those jokes might be morbid or wrong, but that's alright.

If I was just sad at every funeral I went to, and everyone I will have to go to, I would go insane. I've been around death since a very young age, and to me it's not something that is overly sad or scary. It just happens, and everyone is going to die. Spending too much time mourning for that person will just contribute to your own depression, and land you in a rut that is incredibly difficult to climb out of. It's not to say that you can't be sad, but not dwelling on it is my best advice. I miss my loved ones and pets that passed, but they live on in my memory, and that is enough for me.

The overall attitude about funerals is changing in this country. They are becoming less formal, and more like casual family gatherings. I kid you not, at my school's funeral home we have 'Disco Inferno' as an option to play as the family leaves the service and the remains are taken to be cremated. People realize now that you can do basically anything you want, and that it doesn't have to be just people dressed in black and tears everywhere.
I'm here for your body.

I assume that song is usually picked by the people who go with cremation?

Oh Yeah-yer!

To keep those who are not up to speed:

When my Sister and I were growing up, soda pop and sugary cereal were only allowed during holidays and vacations (usually to Wisconsin) and the only candy we had was usually licorice pipes. The soda was almost always some variety of Crush and the sugary cereal was always in teeny tiny boxes.

Luckily I found a grocery store that still sells those single serving sugary variety packs.

Nostalgia is a funny thing.

Smile - Work event netted me flowers and football tickets for my wife and her mother. Meaning Sunday afternoon is free for gaming.

Ticked - throat has been iffy all week and it is getting worse.

Smile: Beat Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance today. Given what I'd read about the difficulty level being intense, I was surprised how easy it was to game the system at the very end. That's two Fire Emblems down, four to go.

Frown: There should be a law against video game endings lasting more than a few minutes. Text, text, text, and more text. So incredibly anti-climatic.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?
