All this talk is making me want to go revisit Vice City.

I'm in the minority. I think Vice is by leaps and bounds the weakest of the series.

-Both follow the same formula on prior installments, just with a fresh coat of paint and a few changes to characters/story

-Both are hyped to the max

-Both have rabid fanboys

-Every installment usually receives high score reviews
This could describe most AAA franchises. Final Fantasy, Elder Scrolls etc.

As to why there is so much hype about GTA 5: Many people were dissapointed in GTA 4 and this one's been a long time coming (development took 5 years and 200 millions IIRC), and it returns to the setting of the beloved San Andreas, that was released almost a decade ago (2004).
Like many if not most boys of my age at the time, I was really into GTA San Andreas for months after it was released, and it feels like it was a long time ago so I see the appeal in getting to play a much better looking, bigger and improved version of that game. I really wish it was developed for PCs though, instead of developing it for 360/PS3, hardware that is way outdated. Atleast they should've waited for Xbone/PS4. I really don't see their reasons behind this decision. It could've been the game that got people to buy Xbone/PS4. We already have a current generation GTA, that is GTA 4 on 360/PS3. I don't see the point of putting so much money into developing a game for systems that are soon about to be replaced. A sandbox game like this can benefit from the increased power of next generation consoles a lot more than any other genre.

Weaker than 3?
We're on a retro game forum, how come no one ever talks about the original GTA games? They were isometric 2D games so you'd think people here would be more into that stuff

It's apparently going to be coming out for PC and PS4/XBONE anyway.

Yeah but how much, if at all, are those ports going to utilize the increased power? If the game was designed with a more powerful system in mind in the first place, they might've been able to design and create things that are now absent in the game.

The story is forced, and all the game adds are a few new rides and flash (woo-hoo! I can change clothes!). It tries too hard and fails. The boat missions? Have there ever been worse missions in a GTA game? You can complete a mission and then "splash"...dead meat. It's so entrenched in trying to be a Scarface knock off that the story overrides the gameplay, and the gameplay is the weakest in the series.

People get so worked up because of the large amount of time in between each GTA game, along with the fact that it is a series that many (maybe even most) of today's average gamers grew up with and loved. If it came in yearly installments the hubbub wouldn't be so loud.
I agree. But perhaps that is part of their strategy? Work the masses into a frenzy. Let the anticipitation grow...

I still put GTA 3 as my favorite, but Vice City is a close second. BUT I will admit the reasons why I liked Vice City were pretty silly:

-Motorcycles!!

-The soundtrack. I'm a child of the '80s and I love that music.

- Ray Liotta

-Had that Miami Vice feel to it. I loved that show (and I know that was intended).

I love the GTA series (although I didn't care for IV) but I don't think I'll ever have that "Wow, this game is GREAT" feeling like I had with GTA 3.

GTA is about murdering people but COD is about killing disgusting subhuman terrorists and other enemies of justice and freedom.
