Hiroshi Yamauchi Dies at 85.

The man who helped convert Nintendo into the name it is today (or was in the 80's / 90's) has passed away.

There were some great stories about him in "The First Quarter" by Steven Kent and "Game Over" by David Sheff, highly recommend checking those out

There's an anecdote from "The First Quarter" about Yamauchi that I love. Back in the early 80s, some shady legal dealings led to Coleco somehow being able to make Donkey Kong for their "Adam" console, which royally pissed off Yamauchi. A meeting was set up between the president of Coleco Arnold Greenberg and Yamauchi:

Yamauchi entered the room abruptly and, without addressing anyone, stood at the end of a table. He became, as one of those present put it, "unglued."

He began with a breathy, high-pitched tirade in a Marlon Brando monotone and quickly became loud and abusive. With a piercing cry, he swung his arm in an arc in front of him, shooting his outstretched index finger toward Greenberg.

Yamauchi's diatribe, all in Japanese, completely stunned everyone in the room.

Greenberg backed off and DK was never sold for "Adam."

He was president of Nintendo from 1949-2002, so he was at the helm when they were (IMO) at their very best. Sad to see him go, and it's also sad to be seeing the original members of the gaming industry start to die off.

Honestly, it makes sense to me. He was surrounded by them at work all day. Why would he want to play one?

I work in television, so I don't want to watch any when I'm at home.
