Re: Random Thoughts Thread
I don't know why this has become a trend, but lately trolls of the European variety have been making it a goal of theirs to get butthurt every time an American refers to the US as America. Because, don't you know, Canadians and Argentinians refer to themselves as Americans all the time.

I've noticed that too. It is rather annoying.
Yes it isn't actually geographically correct to just call he USA - America. But do we need to try and make it an issue to get upset about?

Our country's name is the United States of America. What are we supposed to call ourselves?BoringSupreez wrote:I don't know why this has become a trend, but lately trolls of the European variety have been making it a goal of theirs to get butthurt every time an American refers to the US as America. Well the whole continent is North America and then of course there is South America. So tons of people live in an area called America.
Technically you should say you are from the United States.
It is semantics and a silly thing to be weird about.

We probably should say that but I was always taught at school and home to call myself an American.KDub wrote:Well the whole continent is North America and then of course there is South America. So tons of people live in an area called America.

You don't read well do you? It is about stating where you are from/what we call our home country not what you call your origin/heritage.

Re: Random Thoughts Thread
You'll find that most people don't understand that a word can have two different meanings depending on context without there being any evil cultural influence surrounding it. Hence the absurd controversy about "American".
Note that English doesn't have a word for "person from the United States" other than "American".

If we're playing this game:
The official name of Mexico is Estados Unidos Mexicanos, the United States of Mexico, so saying you're from the United States might not be any more specific!

Jeff Foxworthy was once asked how a redneck would use the word European. He responded, "European on my boot."BoringSupreez wrote:I don't know why this has become a trend, but lately trolls of the European variety have been making it a goal of theirs to get butthurt every time an American refers to the US as America. Let the trolls be butthurt over a name. It keeps them from having to think about Greece.

I was always confused by the fact that people get disgusted by looking at chewed food but find it delicious to gulp(when its in their own mouths) . I feel the same way too... must by a psychological thing.Luke wrote: *seriously people, chew with your mouth closed. And if you are one of those "well I put my hand/napkin over my mouth when I talk and eat" guess what? You are still disgusting and uncivilized. Giving the "one second" gesticulation is a perfectly fine thing to do, opening your mouth while food is in it is vomit inducing.
Its a stupid topic, but if you say you are American because you are from the continent of America , will you be satisified with the answer "I am Asian" if you were to ask some one from where are you?Ack wrote:Jeff Foxworthy was once asked how a redneck would use the word European. And if you say "I am from the United States" , is the USA the only United Stated in the world? Apparently Mexico is United States too.
As far as I am concerned, the USA's name is America because thats how every one refers to it and it is any way because... they ARE in America . They are the only people who got no specific noun to refer to them unlike Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Panama... you get the idea.
The question is, why is it called America in the first place? Shouldn't it be more like Columbiana?
