I love BOF 2 but its a bit hard to go back to the SNES after playing the GBA version, the GBA version had a run button. all RPGS should have a run button.BoneSnapDeez wrote:I always thought BoF II was really underrated. It blows away the first game and is one of the best SNES RPGs period.anonymous1980 wrote:I've been playing Breath of Fire II and have been blown away at how much fun i'm having.
The cast of characters are charming, the plot is interesting, the graphics are gorgeous 2D and the gameplay is great. The random encounters are a pain in the ass, but i got used to them.
After i finish II, i'll go straight to III.
I'm gonna play III sometime myself- probably this winter. I imported the PAL PSP version because I prefer handhelds to consoles these days.
Oh and about shmups - I suck at them too. I love to play them but don't think I've ever finished one that doesn't allow credit-feeding.

Re: How Is Your SNES Gaming Going?
Thanks. I worked my butt off to be able to claim that one. I've only ever beaten a handful of SHMUPS, and most of them contain the numbers 19XX in the title somewhere.s1rweeze wrote:I'm the exact same way, I'm so awful at those games. I think you just have to let your eyes shift slightly out of focus and look at the whole screen instead of just your ship? No idea. Still you should feel pretty good about beating Super R-Type, that game is hard as hellAck wrote:The only problem is, I'm absolute rubbish at SHMUPS! I love the genre and have incredible respect for those who are good at it, but I'm terrible at it. Watching a game like Biometal makes my eyes glaze over. The only SHMUP I've ever beaten on the SNES is Super R-Type, and I played it over and over again religiously for a week.
And Luke just discovered I've never beaten a Super Star Wars game. Guess I'll add that to the list...

I will confess that I have never beaten a shmup. Just not my thing.
Good on ya for beating Super R-Type!

That's the main exception I had in mind, yes.Hobie-wan wrote:FTFYGunstar Green wrote:The SNES just generally doesn't like shmups with a few exceptions unless handled by the masterful programmers at Compile.
Warbling background, animated 'ground' objects, and tons of sprites early in the SNES library. The game runs smoother than this old video shows without a hint of slowdown.

Let me also add this: I've been playing Etrian Odyssey IV on 3DS. It has made me want to make another run through the SNES version of Eye of the Beholder. The only problem there is that the music in the SNES version will drive you crazy.

Sega CD port is where it's at.

UN Squadron was my first SNES shmup, and it's still great. I love Super EDF too -- it does not get a lot of love, but even the arcade original was still fun.Ack wrote:Yeah, I'm thinking I will play U.N. Squadron. I play it occasionally because I really enjoy the artwork and music, and I've managed to get pretty far in it before. I also used to play through Super Earth Defense Force a fair bit and get to the final level, but I never was able to muster the final push through the game. I suppose I should get around to doing that.

As a layman, I don't know what it takes to consider a SHMUP decent, good, or truly great, but I enjoy Super EDF if only because it's one of the few in the genre I feel I actually have a chance at.ExedExes wrote:UN Squadron was my first SNES shmup, and it's still great. I think it's because it's just like the arcade version, except for the 4 new weapons added on to it (the ones in the right side column I believe), and that one wasn't all gimmicky with graphics or gameplay either. It was just pretty simple to play, the bosses were tough, but it didn't use a lot of tricks in the graphics like many SNES shmups did with Mode 7, scaling, and just these huge boss designs, like in UN Squadron. It was a pretty straight port.Ack wrote:As a layman, I don't know what it takes to consider a SHMUP decent, good, or truly great, but I enjoy Super EDF if only because it's one of the few in the genre I feel I actually have a chance at.
I didn't see you beat Super R Type. That's not easy. You have what it takes to try more. Even UN Squadron on Normal level is no problem for you. I've beaten it on the secret "Gamer" difficulty level, the ending may be slightly better, but Normal gets you all the good screens still.

Re: How Is Your SNES Gaming Going?
Haha, thanks for the kind words. I'm interested in seeing what this "Gamer" difficulty holds. How does it differ from the Normal difficulty setting? I'm thinking I'll give this one a try.ExedExes wrote:I didn't see you beat Super R Type. That's not easy. You have what it takes to try more. Even UN Squadron on Normal level is no problem for you. Also, anyone have any thoughts on Imperium? I've played it a bit and like it.
