The last movie I saw was Strictly Ballroom, directed by Baz Luhrmann. Like with every Baz Luhrrmann film I have to say, what a strange film. He has such a unique visual aesthetic that I honestly can not say is good or bad. I just don't know.

The film itself revolves around a young man's desire to incorporate new and unique steps in the ballroom dancing realm, shaking up the community as they attempt to stop him. The movie has the traditional over exaggerated visuals of people with big hair, big expressions and big makeup that seems indicative of his films. I enjoyed this film a lot more than some of his other films, simply because those over the top characters seemed a bit more toned down in comparison to other films like Moulin Rouge or The Great Gatsby.

Overall though, I was very entertained. There was a lot of spirit and passion that stemmed from the characters that seemed missing in a lot of his later works. I thought it was great.

Are we supposed to give an opinion the movie? Sorry, I was not aware of this custom. It is a great movie! Owen Willson is always a great comedic actor. Vince Vaghn is also good in his role. I suck at critiquing, so my overall opinion is watch this movie!

You don't have to, but it kind of defeats the point of posting it. Not to say you did anything wrong, more like, we would love to hear your opinion and have dialog about the film.

My wife loves this film too, more than a normal person should. Her movie tastes always deal with stoner comedies and incredibly deprived films, which is strange since we are a totally normal couple. She just lives vicariously through her movies.

So I have to ask, guys, because it's bothering me: What caused Val Kilmer's career to suddenly nose dive?

Gamers Hand of Fate. I highly recommend it if you get a chance. Even if you have not seen the others. If you have ever played a CCG competitively you will get the jokes, specifically if you played Legends of the Five Rings. I just cant wait for the bluray to be released to us normal folks.

Cloud Atlas. I can't say that I watch movies much at all so I'm not really up to date on it's competition, but I've gotta ask how come this movie wasn't Oscar nominated? According to Wikipedia Robert Ebert himself "praised the film for being "one of the most ambitious films ever made". Because it's German?

Because it is convoluted, predictable, badly written, full of half ass performances, and makes no sense.

Weight gain? Not sure myself. Last awesome Kilmer movie I saw was Salton Sea.

How can a movie be convoluted and make no sense but still be predictable?
Not everything is 100% connected, but the movie clearly has a theme and it does make sense if you pay attention.
Who were the half ass performances? I'll give you that some of the make up made some of the characters feel really awkward, but I don't know/remember if there was anything wrong in the acting.
Given that I haven't seen any of the movies that were nominated for best picture this year I can't say if it deserves to be on that list, but that doesn't mean the movie doesn't deserve any praise at all: for a big budget scifi (partly) film it's surprisingly intelligent, doesn't underestimate the viewer, is very unique in it's style and narrative, had interesting sets and the make up, while at times awkward, was good enough to make many recognizable actors unrecognisable. The movie might be too ambitious and fall short of it's goals, but that's understandable in a complex work with such clashing styles. I'm not saying it's perfect, but it's interesting, unique and ambitious.

Haven't read the book so I don't know how faithful it is to the source material, but looks like the book was well received
