I've been playing Breath of Fire II and have been blown away at how much fun i'm having.
The cast of characters are charming, the plot is interesting, the graphics are gorgeous 2D and the gameplay is great. The random encounters are a pain in the ass, but i got used to them.
After i finish II, i'll go straight to III.

Lucky duck! I love Breath of Fire III. I've yet to even start BoF II though.anonymous1980 wrote:I've been playing Breath of Fire II and have been blown away at how much fun i'm having.

And Secret of the Stars will have to wait, as we just picked up GTA V. I walked into my apartment, saw my roommmate had bought it, and declared, "I see I won't be using the SNES any time soon." To his credit, he told me he didn't mind going back to playing PC games a few nights a week while I play my Super Nintendo (he also enjoys retro games, but is much more into the N64), though I know how much he enjoys the GTA series, so I'll likely just emulate for a bit and take on a few of the SNES' lesser offerings. I'd been trying to talk him into playing more console games anyway, though this was mainly me extolling the virtues of his copy of Harvest Moon 64 over Farming Simulator, which he recently got into.
So now I have to figure out a few SNES games in my collection to check out in the meantime. Maybe I'll finally get around to playing a few other SHMUPS. Or a platformer I've only spent a little time with. U.N Squadron? Mickey Mania? Super Nova? Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster Busts Loose?

I'd go with all those. I just started Super Nova myself. Pretty tough, as a good Darius game should be.Ack wrote:So now I have to figure out a few SNES games in my collection to check out in the meantime. The only problem is, I'm absolute rubbish at SHMUPS! I love the genre and have incredible respect for those who are good at it, but I'm terrible at it. Watching a game like Biometal makes my eyes glaze over. The only SHMUP I've ever beaten on the SNES is Super R-Type, and I played it over and over again religiously for a week.ExedExes wrote:I'd go with all those. I just started Super Nova myself. U.N. Squadron is fairly doable as far as shmups go since it's not one-hit-kill and you can save up money to improve your fighter and it's pretty fun. It's also got a rockin' soundtrack. I like it a lot.
The slowdown can be pretty heavy at times though. The SNES just generally doesn't like shmups with a few exceptions.
It's still one of my SNES favorites.

I always thought BoF II was really underrated. It blows away the first game and is one of the best SNES RPGs period.anonymous1980 wrote:I've been playing Breath of Fire II and have been blown away at how much fun i'm having.

I'm gonna play III sometime myself- probably this winter. I imported the PAL PSP version because I prefer handhelds to consoles these days.
Oh and about shmups - I suck at them too. I love to play them but don't think I've ever finished one that doesn't allow credit-feeding.
Re: How Is Your SNES Gaming Going?
Yeah, I'm thinking I will play U.N. Squadron. I play it occasionally because I really enjoy the artwork and music, and I've managed to get pretty far in it before. I also used to play through Super Earth Defense Force a fair bit and get to the final level, but I never was able to muster the final push through the game. I suppose I should get around to doing that.
Re: How Is Your SNES Gaming Going?
It seems you've chosen, but for the record, I'm behind Mickey Mania.
Fantastic game, short and sweet and oozing charm and personality.

Warbling background, animated 'ground' objects, and tons of sprites early in the SNES library. The game runs smoother than this old video shows without a hint of slowdown.

I'm the exact same way, I'm so awful at those games. I think you just have to let your eyes shift slightly out of focus and look at the whole screen instead of just your ship? No idea. Still you should feel pretty good about beating Super R-Type, that game is hard as hellAck wrote:The only problem is, I'm absolute rubbish at SHMUPS!
