I don't know why you want to move to NYC then. Our studio is $1300 a month. Granted, you can find cheaper, but $200 a week (= $800 a month) is cheaper than what you'll find here, barring living further away from the city (and thus a much longer commute) or in really crappy neighborhoods (with all the problems of poverty that accompany it). Not trying to fully dissuade you, but try to be realistic about it. Getting a job there first and saving up should be your first priority.REPO Man wrote:Throw in groceries, cell phone bills and renting the storage unit for all our stuff, that's over $2000 a month!

I've actually found rooms for rent that only cost $500/month, and I plan on working two jobs. Basically, just work my ass off for a year to get caught up to the point to where I've got around 2-4 months' worth of rent socked away so I can take time off to focus on my filmmaking. Mostly it'll be working for cheap directing music videos for local unsigned bands and basically whatever I can do with a digital camcorder and free editing software.o.pwuaioc wrote:I don't know why you want to move to NYC then. @Repo
If you want to be in the entertainment industry then why not come to LA? It's cheaper, less congested and the it's capital of the world in entertainment. Idk much above the cost of life in NYC but if rent in a decent neighborhood is $1300 like o.p said, living in LA seems a little more suited for your situation.

I believe the term you're looking for is "closet". You've found a closet you can rent for $500/month.REPO Man wrote:I've actually found rooms for rent that only cost $500/month

No... I said "room". If I meant closet, I would have said "closet".MrPopo wrote:I believe the term you're looking for is "closet". You've found a closet you can rent for $500/month.REPO Man wrote:I've actually found rooms for rent that only cost $500/month
And @oxymoron: While LA's film industry is greater than NYC's, it's also much farther away, the weather sucks, the people are phony and all I'd end up doing in LA is doing shit work for Hollywood movies. Plus, a lot of my ideas take place in NYC. And not just my film ideas, or even my "entertainment industry" ideas for that matter. I've also imagined that when I'm rich enough, I can expand into other industries. While there are some "entertainment industry" ideas there (like I'd love to try to bring over Japanese tokusatsu, subtitled natch, while parterning with IFC and Crunchyroll for television and VOD markets, respectively), I'd also love to get into food & beverage (and with my ideas, NYC's more suitable than LA, since my stuff's more foodie-friendly), home furnishings, and even fashion (like trying to merge elements of fictional fashion, like that of comic books and Japanese anime, into both general and high fashion).
LA's not necessarily a bad place, but it's just not for me. Maybe I'll do some dealings with LA (there's an idea for a film series that'd be easier to shoot in LA), but for me, it's NYC or bust!
And I'm rescinding my comment about my mom being a bitch. I don't regret it, because I refuse to regret anything, no matter how regrettable it may be.

The link I posted even said this... if it says anything about being "cozy", you are renting a BED not even a closet. o.pwuaioc just said that you will be in a neighborhood with poverty and all the things that come with it.. if you genuinely think your mom and brother are imposing on you now, and you think you're going to make it in an apartment in NYC all by yourself without roomates...REPO Man wrote:No... In all honesty repo, just join the military. It would be a more cozy situation than what you are in now, and you may be able to live in New York when your tour is over or something, hell I don't know. Just make a move before you are 20 years down the road and have more regrets than you do now.

Every time I read an article like this, I can't help but hear "Poor economy? Bad jobs market? Bah, none of these are real issues, the real problem is that there's something wrong with this generation."Jmustang1968 wrote:Kind of reminded me of this: http://www.waitbutwhy.com/2013/09/why-g ... happy.html
