I was thinking the other day that some modder (is that a word?) should create a Commodore 64 controller with a D-pad and two action buttons. Remove "up" from the D-pad and map it to one of the action buttons. That would allow you to play platformers with "proper" NES/SMS style controls, not the crappy up-for-jump joystick controls.
Also, a controller with a d-pad shaped like a t-block:

would be rad.

that's borderline brilliant. Why hasn't this been done before?

FTFY

Also, "up for jump" controls usually drive me crazy...but they did not bother me at all when I played through Muramasa: The Demon Blade earlier this year...I don't quite know why...

Any game with QTE sequences. I like your idea a lot.
Yeah, that is a great idea. Maybe add a little rumble to it, so you can feel when to press the lit button, too.
Maybe have the controller just press the button for you as well.

Just finished Gratuitous Space Battles for the PC. At first I didn't like it since you don't directly control the ships like you could in games like Star Craft. However, the game has really grown on me with its ship customization, multiple enemy types, and scenarios. I found myself doing this during gameplay:

I don't know! I can't imagine it would be that difficult.

And there are a lot of platformers on the system that would benefit...

@prfsnl_gmr
Up for jump works in Muramasa because it's a huge, slow, floaty jump. It doesn't work well in your typical 2D platformer/run 'n gun game. Getting back to the C64, games like Great Giana Sisters have really frustrating controls.

It would be super easy. The real helpful thing would be adding a button and having it simulate the space bar since that's what many games use for a secondary item like grenades in Commando and such.

Yeah I thought of that too.

Space bar = jump in Contra. It's a laughably broken control scheme.

Doesn't a 6 button genesis controller work? I say 6 button because it has a better d-pad, so even if the jump is still up, atleast it's more comfortable C64 joystick or Genesis 3 button controller.
What joystick you use? Tac-2?
My WTB thread (Sega CD/Saturn games)
Also looking to buy: Ys III (TG-16 CD), Shadowrun (Genesis) Hori N64 mini pad and Slayer (3DO) in long box/just the long box

I've heard that plugging in Genesis controllers into a C64 can be harmful to the system. I don't do it.

I presently use a QuickShot joystick. Occasionally an Atari 2600 stick.
