yeah when you scan for activity if a research project finishes it gives you the option to assign new research or to keep scanning. I've done a lot of ignoring research I guess because I'll often try to "hurry up" when I'm in the base. I really enjoy just getting back out on the battlefield, though that haste can often lead to my downfall.
Yeah, there is never a good reason not to research.

Yeah, the game is paused when you're in base. Take as much time as you need.

I'm aware of PoR though I've never played Wizard's Crown or Demon's Winter, heard good things about Wizard's Crown though. Just because some games did that back then, does not mean that I'm expecting all 8-bit RPGs to be like that, especially when at time of writing I was under the impression that Pool of Radiance was the first RPG to implement grid based system (I know Ultima had grids, but I don't equate the Ultimas with "tactical RPGs" in my mind)

As for your question, Wizardry 8 is quite modern, it was released in 2001 :P Well, there's atleast Dark Spire and the Etrian Odyssey games for Nintendo DS, but I can't think of any computer RPGs released during the last 5 years that would've been Wizardry/Dragon Quest-style blobbers. Legend of Grimrock I guess, though it has real time combat, it's grid based. There's probably some indy/kickstarter CRPGs that are turn based blobbers though.

haha RTS is definitely a genre I've stayed away from. When we played Command & Conquer for Together Retro I remember loading it up and just being like "OMG! WTF?" the whole time. I really had no idea.

But yeah, RTS is the antithesis of what I like about something like XCOM. To me the taking turns thing is really just a relaxing way to play a game.

Korean Starcraft pros do over 300 actions per minute you know. The world record is 818 actions per minute (of course not for the duration of the whole game, but for an intense minute or two) :shock:

Both are valid ways to design and a game and can be enjoyable in their own right, but real time often means that at higher difficulty setting it's not just strategy that wins the game, but also reflexes, speed and "skills", which isn't really kosher in "thinking man's games" (games like fighters, shmups and FPS being the antithesis of that term, though that's not to say you don't need to think or strategize in those games)

how's this? Out of sheer frustration I deleted a save of like 15 hours and started from scratch again tonight for the fourth time. If that isn't an amazing game, I don't know what is haha.

So another thing that I love about this game - seems no matter how much time you sink into it, you're always learning new stuff. I mean, combined I'd say I've now put around 45 hrs in, right? But I feel like I've only now started to get a strong grasp on how to really do the base management stuff successfully. Which is probably why I didn't enjoy it so much before haha. I think I've mentioned in other threads that when I play RPG's, I usually don't bother buying lots of new weapons and armor and stuff. Well I guess that's true of any game really. So in a lot of ways I think I went into XCOM with that mindset of just using what I had and was only really researching stuff or building stuff as I felt I "needed" to. This playthrough I'm just going really slow in the base, paying attention to what I should be building, researching everything, really thinking about how to loadout my soldiers, etc.

Oh, and to make things more interesting I also set this playthrough so that all settings were randomized. You know those advanced options? So it's like when you hire a new troop his stats are random. And promoted troops' stats are randomized. And the range of damage an attack does is more random.

newest game is going pretty well. Squad expanded to 6 soldiers, I've got almost half the globe under satellite now. I don't believe I've had a single soldier die yet either. This is nice because all my troops are being promoted pretty steadily now. Been researching EVERYTHING. Been developing new weapons consistently. But the new armor seems even more important and awesome. I just finished building an alien containment as well.

I did manage to lose Nigeria though. :?

I now have 4 colonels and have full satellitr coverage. I need to assault the alien base. Had a close call a few missions back.

The map was the alley with 2 warehouses on either side. I was fighting 3 mutons and was ambushed by 3 more (1 a berserker) amd a disc. I lost both support guys I brought, one was a captain, and a sgt Heavy. My unique heavy was down and stabilized and my assault guy just went down for the count when I finished the mission with my sniper who was the last standing.

My last mission I lost a sniper to a crit by another ambushing pack of mutons. I was in an alien ship and they ran around to the front of the ship and hit us from behind.

As soon as I am done with this campaign I am loading up PS Torment.
