I have seen various "phone-checking" resellers in my area. It is always so sad...These people are trying to make a living - or at least supplement their income - by reselling games, and they have no idea what anything is worth. Collecting video games is my hobby, and I generally have a much better knowledge or market value than these resellers...
I resell quite a bit myself but I would never use a smart phone to price check a stores inventory. It just feels like cheating and in the long run all it does is inspire store owners to start marking up to eBay prices.
actually , this helps a lot. I once got a new Perfect Dark 64 , which I paid something like $60+ for thinking it was a big deal. When I checked up online, it had an extremely low value (not sure why) something like $5 . I exchanged it for 007 which had a much better value. So price checking is worth it
As a buyer I can understand people using price checking especially before dropping a decent sum of cash $20+ on something. However it annoys me when resellers go into a store and price check everything especially when that store is offering low flat rate pricing on their games.

If I were a store owner and saw people on a regular basis using their smart phones to price check everything then I would be inclined to price check the stuff myself. The end result would be yet another store with eBay buy it now prices on everything :P.

I would love if stores did price checks of ebay / amazon, and then took off the 15% they are saving not selling on ebay / paypal. $100 ebay buy now is $85 in the store. The tax is a wash for the shipping saved. The net to the store is the same and i'm more inclined to buy knowing I just beat ebay by 15%. When stores direct match ebay buy now, then I say to myself, "eh, i'll just try to grab it at auction then" which ultimately costs the store that sale by being a wee bit greedy.

I agree with this. I have "informed" some sellers that - if they want eBay prices - then they should just sell their games on eBay (which is, generally, a lot more work than many sellers care to undertake). Likewise, I have "informed" them that, if I wanted to pay eBay prices, I would buy the games on eBay and have them shipped to my door with all of eBay's buyer protections. That usually get them in line.

I am also lucky that my best local resource prices games based on videogamepricecharts.com. They use the "cart only" price for all games, which means that I get a fair price on carts...but an incredible price on CIB titles.

IDK guys, I disagree. You can have a small business selling games on eBay with no overhead cost, working out of the house. That's not true for a store, especially a small store. A $100 game should be $85 because $15 is going to eBay and PayPal fees and whatnot. But if there is no eBay, PayPal, etc then that same $15 is going to the store's overhead. It's not like the guy selling the game doesn't have fees to pay. The fees are actually much larger. Do you know how expensive it is to operate a small store? It's more than eBay. So if this logic follows than the games should actually cost more in the store than on eBay.

That and the fact that if the store sold stuff under market, the resellers would clean them out and show up on ebay anyway.

If the price in the store is the same as eBay, then why the hell wouldn't you prefer to pick it up in the store? You get to physically examine it, in person. And also, support your local small businesses.

This.

Main problem I'd see would be if the store is overcharging for the title/condition, but same price for the same(ish) item would be fine.
