So if I'm understanding this system correctly, the number of entries (that is, those listed more than once) will not be guaranteed a win, but given an extra "contest entry" in the grand scheme of this random pick system. That's fine. I'd much rather have it that way than 5 picks for one game and have it just automatically win.

Those 1990-1995 picks are looking pretty good! Lots of unique games there.

2006-2010 -- yeah, let me just say it's up to Ninja and Skate to do well in those

If anyone needs help getting something in MAME up and running, please PM. I can get you in and with your favorite controller.

Is it possible to post a how to, like step by step? Maybe i've been doing something wrong along the way? Or is it going to be unique to each person's setup?

You guys who use MAME a lot - do you have many versions installed or do you primarily use one?

The hard part can be finding roms. The rom version needs to match the MAME version. I've been using version 1.36 for years. It doesn't support everything, but most of the pre-2000 titles people have posted in here work on it. It's also very easy to get a PS3/360 arcade stick to work with it.

The easiest way to get it is to just find a torrent of a mame build with a complete rom set. The download takes quite some time, and the majority of the games are mahjong titles, but i've always been able to get them to work this way easily.

If anyone wants help setting this up, i've done it a handful of times over a couple different versions and i'd be more than happy to help. I haven't set it up in awhile, but I need to put it on my new PC, so that'll be a decent refresher.

I exclusively use MAME 0.141, the final stable release of 2010. They added pinball ROMs and mechanical games starting in the next version (0.141u1) and as a result, the MAMEUI frontend took longer to load due to hundreds of new games that were added as a result. I only use a newer version for a few games that had their sound fixed (Toaplan games, for example)

Here's how I would go about setting it up on a new machine -

Before running MAME, make sure your controller is connected.

1) Get 0.141 here

2) After running the .exe, getting the roms and putting them in the MAMEUI/roms folder

3) After starting MAMEUI, on the left side of the screen, click on "Available" (so that it only displays games you have), then hit F5 to do a game search, this should find the roms that are in your roms folder and display them in the middle.

3) Double click the game to begin, and hit Tab to bring up the in-game options menu. Select "Input (general)", then Player 1 Controls, which is the fastest way to set a controller up. This will make the inputs you select the default for *each* game. If you want to use a custom setup for any game, you can select "Input (this game)".

4) Go through the various inputs with the keyboard, to change an input, hit the Enter key, then the controller direction or button you want to associate with that input (to do "P1 Up" you would hit up on your controller). It should read "Joy 1 Up" for a direction and "Joy Button 1" for a button assignment if it recognizes your controller. You can also change the Insert Coin and Start Button keys to controller buttons if you have the extra assignments to do so.

This is my general setup with the X-Arcade Solo joystick. It has a MAME mode built in. It uses keyboard directions as inputs for the stick. (the stick itself is meant to act like a keyboard once plugged in, so directions on the stick are number pad keys, and the buttons themselves are keyboard keys as well) The input for Up is blank to show you that is where I would move my stick up to have it read as "Num Key 8".

This is a custom setup example for Exed Exes. I'm demonstrating this with a Microsoft Sidewinder USB pad (6 button). Since this is a joystick to the computer, MAME will read it as Joy 1.

As long as your controller can plug into the computer, MAME should have no problem understanding it.

If there are anymore questions or maybe something I missed, please fill it in.

Thank you for all of that. I'll give it a go this weekend and see how I do.

To be clear on the controller - you are saying to have the controller plugged in when I download MAME the first time...or each and every time I launch it...or both? I guess i'll default to both, makes the most sense...

Have it plugged in every time before you boot MAME. It helps if you can use the same controller/stick also, because some register the same inputs a little differently. One of my sticks registers "Joy 1 Up" while another will register "Joy 1 Hat Switch Up". If I don't change the settings when I use the other joystick, then it won't register those inputs.

Wait, wasn't MAME v.141 the release right before they added sound to Toaplan games? :? I wouldn't recommend so old of a build. I think 0.143u9 is the last version of MAME that supports the SH3 stuff? (I guess there was a custom build of this called "slowpoke" which allows for manually setting the blitter delay for accurate slowdown.)
It's a bit harder to find now due to CAVE's C&D letter to MAME, but if you ask around someone should be able to send it to you.
Super-X should run fine in other versions of MAME, however
Also, when I listed the "majority picks" I didn't realize they were ALL your picks, Mike. Please don't think I was taking a jab at you. In fact I'd like to take this opportunity to Thank You for organizing this
you could thank me back by seeing to it that Super-X kicks off the tournament
The thing with the CAVE games in a competition like this (besides them each deserving their own SOTM month  ) is that people who already have a sense of the scoring mechanics will see far greater improvement in a week's time than those who don't. The relevance of the three lies not in the mechanics, but in the popularity of CAVE games. Each of those games have extensive strategy write-ups in the shmups forum and plenty of "superplay" style videos floating around. Not too much point in talking strategy when its all been said before...
you know what game doesn't get talked about enough? Super-X.
The "behind closed doors" shmups forum STGT voting also had themes for their weeks. (i.e. CAVE week) that would limit something like this from happening. And in 2009 they even had a "No CAVE" rule because two of the five games played the previous year were developed by CAVE.
Super-X rules.
BTW People seemed to be making an attempt to select a variety of games at first, until you said:

Super-X is like NMK ripping off Toaplan in 1994 with no checkpoints, no weapon power issues, and a manageable hitbox. And the Power-Up item is super gratifying when ripping through enemies. Awesome.

Fair enough.

This looks cool to me:

If I knew for sure I could play them...yeah, i'd definitely pick a series of lesser known games for my picks, but for right now, I want to at least have a chance to play them, hence my personal picks - I have them, just haven't played them, so selfishly, those work for me.

If I can get MAME running properly, then anyone can, and i'll gladly change up my picks. My biggest issue has been controller support, hopfully having it plugged in prior to install and each program load fixes that problem...

I'm all for random pick as well, even with extra entries for the games with more than one nomination. This seems like it would be the most fun IMO.

I can get my controllers to work in MAME, I just hardly ever use it. If we go with announcing the game the day before, I might take you up on the offer for help. Even a few days notice would help me a lot in making sure I can play all the games, but it is what it is. Honestly I kind of hope a few games get picked that I've never played.

Need FreeMCboot? I'll install it on your PS2 Memory Card for free if you cover postage both ways.
Consoles: I have too much stuff
Arcade: No seriously, I have too much stuff. Someone grab a shovel and dig me out of my basement.

If only Hotdog Storm got a Saturn port, it would be a lot more popular than it is.
