Yes, yes, oh GOD YES!!!
I have the Ultimate Edition from Anchor Bay, so I have my choice of the US Theatrical Cut, European Cut (done by horror maestro Dario Argento) and the extended cut.
Also, if you're a fan of Oingo Boingo and/or Danny Elfman, I recommend:
FYI, the pic is also a link.
Anyway, it's this really wild take on Alice in Wonderland with catchy numbers that totally make up for its under-80min runtime.
Re-watched Scary Movie. The first one. Still pretty funny, but can't hold up to the more recent ones. My brother, as well as his girlfriend and her brother (who is also one of his friends), watched it, too. My bro's girlfriend hasn't seen any of Scary Movie films or any of the Saw movies, so next film I'm gonna rent is one of them.
"The Heart is Deceitful Above All Things", written/directed/starring Asia Argento. It's about a drug-addled young woman who gains custody of her son of 7 years old, who then exposes him to a world of drugs, sex, and revolving lovers.
I just saw the post that was hating on day and land of the dead...okay, land sucked, but day of the dead is great! I've enjoyed both the 90's remake of night (without romero's approval) and the dawn remake from a few years ago. Dawn was way better as the original. I really want to see diary of the dead and can't wait for Island of the dead in 2009!
I'm currently watching "Night of the Zombies" aka zombie creeping flesh, aka hell of the living dead, aka virus, aka...
It's pretty lame so far...no real zombies to speak of, but we'll see...

So far, the only other director who IMHO does zombies justice is Lucio Fulci. Watch Zombie (aka Zombi 2) and/or The Beyond (not "From Beyond", a Lovecraft-based horror film from Stuart Gordon and starring fangirl-fave Jeffrey Combs). I mean, I've seen other zombie films, but so far, only Fulci and Romero have created gr8 zombie films. And when I say that, I mean more than one zombie flick, which excludes Peter Jackson's Brain Dead (aka Dead Alive) and Lloyd Kaufman's Poultrygeist.
Oh, yeah. I got my DVD of Poultrygeist yesterday. If you're a fan of Troma or bad zomedies, check it out.
Zomedies? What about RomZomComs? And I still say Day of the Dead wasn't as good as the first two. The makeup and gore effects were great, but the story? To me, meh at best. I just didn't care for it.
Oh, yeah, I also recently watched The Long Goodbye, a 1970s update on the 1940s private eye Philip Marlowe. I really enjoyed it, some good stuff. A bit different in terms of setting(he's got some interesting neighbors, that's for sure), but Marlowe is absolutely hilarious in his antics throughout the film. Seriously good stuff.
Ack wrote:Ah, I gotcha. I ain't looking down on you, they aren't for everybody. I've known some film lovers that didn't like Kurosawa's work for various reasons. But I'm more than willing to recommend a few if you ever feel the itch to see more! I don't think film should be an elitist hobby either, but I think folks should try to watch a little of everything, not just the top releases of the latest year.
Personally I haven't seen Diary of the Dead. From the trailers it came off a bit too much like that subway tunnel scene from 28 Weeks Later...and frankly, I hated that film, so it turned me away. As far as I know there's not a genre name for that hand held camera approach, though Zombie film works for the subject matter.
And if you want some more classic '80s, watch Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure. It's the role Keanu Reeves was born to play. Trading Places, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Karate Kid, Revenge of the Nerds...great stuff. Some of my favorite movies. And, since you're on Racketboy, I should probably plug his favorite film trilogy: Back to the Future. All three are good.
Indeed BttF is one of my all-time favourites, ranks up there with Indiana Jones and Lethal Weapon trilogies (if you disregard the awful 3rd sequels). I also enjoyed Weekend at Bernie's 2 but that was a long time ago. I ordered the DVD but I'm not sure I'll enjoy watching it again quite as much.
Are you interested in philosophical-themed films btw? I enjoyed Waking Life (and A Scanner Darkly since it had philosophical undertones) but slept halfway through I Heart Huckabees. Any recommendations if so?
Also, I managed to get film they made based on Yakuza but it was confusing and the pace was all messed up. Others who watched it said it was okay, but I'm not so sure.. I mean if you haven't played the game the film offers no solace in totally ignoring to explain the narrative.

I've been exploring 70s cinema and I like what I found so far.. Klute and the French Connection are both amazing (the slower pace to them is also quite appealing). Any gritty cop dramas from the 70s you could recommend (Dirty Harry excluded since I've seen them all)?
We'll start with the '70s flicks. First off, there's a lot of ways to take the cops and robbers flick. If you want Noir, watch Chinatown and The Long Goodbye(though I would suggest looking into the stuff from the 1940s and 1950s).
For crime films, try The Sting, or the original Italian Job(1969 release date...close enough). Dog Day Afternoon was really good too. And there's always Get Carter.
As for just straight up police films, Bullitt. Also Walking Tall(the 1973 version), which also had a sequel. For shits and giggles, there's an MST3K episode of the edited version of Mitchell(it's also Joel's last episode on the show). Most of your really good cop action films won't show up until the 80s, with titles like 48 Hours, Police Story, Lethal Weapon...or even such films as Red Heat(good for a laugh, but don't expect a serious film here).
As for philosophical works, ever seen Ingmar Bergman's Seventh Seal? You might really enjoy it.
Finally, I'm a big fan of Takashi Miike, but I realize he's not for everybody. Still, he's done a lot of interesting and varied material. If you want something a bit more light-hearted, try Zebraman or The Happiness of the Katakuris. At the same time, his episode for the Masters of Horror series was not shown on television on Showtime with the rest of the series when it was brought over. The creator of the series, Mick Garris, claimed it was the most disturbing thing he had ever seen. Eh, what can I say? The guy's great!
