... drumroll ...

1990-1995: Batsugun Special (saturn/mame)
1996-2000: Battle Garegga (saturn/mame)
2001-2005: Ketsui (J360/ps3/mame)
2006-2010: Mushihimesama Futari 1.5 Maniac (360/mame)

... cue the applause !! ...

My only regret is that I couldn't fit Armed Police Batrider in there!
Sure, because those games don't get enough attention already...

And Batsugun week automatically goes to the team with whomever can milk Jupiter.

Sure! No argument there!
One of those tables (Ketsui) was even started by yours truly.
But to even the playing field here I think we need to step more outside our comfort zones and shy away from the more popular titles of the genre. Which is besides the fact that it's nice to shine a light on a relatively unknown game and give it the attention it deserves.

Your picks are obviously great, but are more suited for next year's Shmup of the Month Club, IMO.

Fair enough. I revise my list then . . .

90-95: 1941 Counter Attack (PS2, mame)
96-00: Gradius IV Fukkatsu (PS2, PSP, mame)
01-05: Ibara (PS2, mame)
06-13: Muchi Muchi Pork (360 region free, mame)

These are a little more obscure.

And what exactly is that? 1941 is a sort of prequel by Capcom, the only bad thing about it is the annoying low on life beeping sound.

1944 was developed by Raizing. Again, nothing wrong from what I see.

More people own and play GHOULS than 41. Ands as cool a game as 41 looks and sounds, it's still meh compared to 43, KAI, and XX. If it weren't for it's rarity, people wouldn't noticed it. Only games that it rocks are 42 and 44. And 44 plays like a Verti smashed into a Hori, with a boss rush kinda feel. And 42, well, Let's just say that 42 is a Classic. Only people I've met with a hard on for 41 and 44 are hare core collectors who get all excited over rare pcbs (like 41) and hard core Raizing fans who want to get 'em all (like 44). Even then, 41 and 44 are low gets on their list compared to other more sought after games on the Top Shmup lists.

Ok, well I wasn't really talking from a collector's standpoint. 1941 is plenty tough though. I can get farther in 1942, 1943, and 1943 Kai than I could in '41. Yes, 1944 was during that "put a vertical into a horizontal" screen thing that Capcom also did with Giga Wing 1/2 and Mars Matrix, and the stages themselves can be pretty sparse and slow moving, but the boss battles were pretty special, some of the meanest vehicles this side of 19XX. All of them are memorable in their own way.
