I don't know. The original Gradius is the only shmup I've ever really 1cc-ed; and generally, if I hit a wall, it felt like my fault. One recommendation I would give is to not collect more than two speed power ups, ever. (I think I usually just stuck to one.)
I love the original Gradius, but II and III are stupid hard. More so III than II, but the ice block stage in two gives me fits. The original feels like a perfect difficulty to me.

I have beaten Gradius. Gradius II shit starts to get real.

Gradius II is tough. I find it really hard to recover once you die. Gradius IV on the other hand I find to be more fair. Even though it's even harder, they make the recoveries seem possible.
