Had a decent discussion on MKT recently, so I thought I'd create a thread on the MKs for the Sega consoles.
I'll start off by ranking my favorite MKs on Sega (only including the ones I have played).
1) MK2 - 32x
2) MK - Sega Genesis
3) UMK3 - Sega Genesis
4) MK2 - Sega Genesis
5) MK Gold - Dreamcast
6) MKT - Saturn
7) UMK3 - Saturn
8 ) MK2 - Saturn

Re: Sega's Mortal Kombat Games
I actually think Sega's MK games were dreadful. To be fair, the only ones I've played were on the Genesis/Game Gear/Master System- but every one of them was awful. I'd like to give the Saturn/Dreamcast games a try if I can find them, particularly MK II on the Saturn.

Re: Sega's Mortal Kombat Games
The only ones I played on "Sega" were MK1-3 on Genesis. And, for sure, other versions are superior. MK1's only advantage is blood code.
I have MK1 on Sega CD ... but I don't have a Sega CD, and I never bothered tossing it into the PC.

The 32X MK2 is one of the best home ports, if not the best home port of the game from that era. I'll even take it over the version on the Saturn personally. The only negative is it requires you to have a working 32X.

I thought the Saturn port of MK2 was god awful myself. Other than some graphical enhancements, the genesis version is better in every way. Its bad enough that I couldn't even keep it in my collection and I love Mortal Kombat.
I saw some hate in another thread for Ultimate MK3 which I can't dispute because I haven't played the other ports since they originally came out, but I still find that version to be a great game. Its better in every way than the Genesis MK3 that's for sure.
MK1 is still my favorite for many reasons but mostly nostalgic.

All the Saturn ports suck for me, but MK2 on the Saturn was the worst MK I have played.
MK Gold was the best CD game I have played.

Re: Sega's Mortal Kombat Games
I loved Mortal Kombat when I was a kid, but now that I'm an adult my fighting game preferences lean heavily towards the more strategic Street Fighter II-style.
I was a Sega kid though, so almost all of my MK experience came from Sega consoles. The first one I had was the original on Game Gear. It hasn't aged well but at the time it was a pretty awesome for a handheld fighting game! My favorite was Mortal Kombat II on the 32X; I've read that there are a couple sound-issues that prevent it from being 100% arcade-perfect but for a kid in the 90s, it was CLOSE ENOUGH.
I was always annoyed by the load times in the Sega CD version of Mortal Kombat. I don't remember anything egregiously wrong with the Saturn version of Ultimate MK3; at least it blew me away compared to the lackluster (at best) Genesis version of MK3.
IMO Mortal Kombat Gold is trash, but I didn't like Mortal Kombat 4 to begin with.

Re: Sega's Mortal Kombat Games
Why was UMK3 so bad on the Genesis/Mega Drive? Honestly, I had a blast with it
The load times on the Saturn kills the MKs enjoyment. My brother and I tried to play, but like to get match after match with no waits.
Nonetheless, I loved MK as a kid and it got me through some hard times of boredom.

I'm the same way. I hardly pop in my MKs into the Genesis anymore. I always find myself playing Street Fighter 2.Nemoide wrote:I loved Mortal Kombat when I was a kid, but now that I'm an adult my fighting game preferences lean heavily towards the more strategic Street Fighter II-style.

I will also give mad props to MKII on 32X. It's the main reason I never bothered to get the SNES version (owned a 32X before I got an SNES).
Also, assuming you have the official 6-button controller (and what respectable Sega Fighter fan doesn't), I always liked the control better on Genesis.
Sega CD Mortal Kombat is a strange one:
It plays well enough, and I can tolerate the load times (and the pause right before fatalities really makes it more dramatic, I love hearing the disc spin at the moment of execution).
...but the fight with Shang Tsung is laughably bad. It pauses so frequently as he morphs that you really can't enjoy the fight. Don't know how the game got past playtesting.
The extra soundtrack is a nice bonus though
For some odd reason, I own this version and not the Genesis one (which has my recommendation simply for smooth gameplay and no load times)...not sure how that happened
.
UMK3 on Genesis is fun enough. People like to mock the plethora of clone characters (mostly deserved), but I actually like the extra ninjas. I only wish they didn't have to remove animalities.
I also own MKTrilogy on Saturn, mostly for collection purposes. I'd really rather play it on N64 or PS1 most of the time though.
