I don't think I need more than one controller.
I was just talking to a buddy of mine when I asked if he was getting a PS4 or XBO. He said he is wanting a PS4 first, then eventually an XBO.
I then told him that I have a PS4 with an extra controller and two games reserved. But, I told him that I will probably trade the extra controller for an additional game. Reason being is that I NEVER...EVER have people over to play games. We do tend to have people over for dinner and what not and we will usually sit around the living room and talk while the kids play. Sometimes we will turn a game on and pass the controller around. Last month we all traded off playing Little Big Planet Karting. We all had a blast. But, we all just traded off.
But, this kind of occurrence isn't common. Gaming isn't the center of our get togethers.
So, thinking of this, I don't think I have a need for an additional controllers for any of my systems really. Now, when my kids get old enough to play games and they have friends over, it will probably be a different story.
How often do you all have people over for multiplayer gaming?

just wait until there are cheap wired ones for $20 or less, as always there will be tons of third party ones. no sense buying an expensive extra controller that will rarely get used.

Yeah, thats a good idea. What I would really like is if Razor or some other good accessory company made a high quality wireless controller for it, which I could buy and use the DS4 as a spare controllerninjainspandex wrote:just wait until there are cheap wired ones for $20 or less, as always there will be tons of third party ones. no sense buying an expensive extra controller that will rarely get used.

Yes you only need one controller.
A SNES controller.

I tend to keep 2 official controllers for each console. Rarely do i have someone who wants to play co-op or MP locally but they are nice to have around just in case one ever decides to go out. Plus I have a bad habit of leaving my 360 and PS3 controllers off the charger between game sessions so having a back up to swap to is nice if they happen to die midgame
.
I am a hoarder though
I usually have 2 official controllers per console, and I usually keep 1 of every unique controller I bump into :X.

I often play games with my friends. I have more than four people over every month or two, so having at least one console with that many controllers is important.
I go for official controllers on older systems and whatever is cheap on new ones.

I used to buy four controllers (or however many there was support for) for each of my systems just on the off chance i'd ever want to play with more people. In most cases i've made use of them, but when I got them for my 360, I realized that none of my games even supported four players (except for some XBLA games). When I got my PS3, I decided right away that i'd only need two, and from now on i'm probably going to keep it at that. Even on the new systems, i've made plenty of use of two controllers. If not just for guests, then for the ease of being able to charge one while using the other.

In all seriousness, I have to have the max controllers on every platform, including PC. We have people over to play games all of the time. My wife and I are social gamers. We have a lot of fun having friends over and socializing over a couple of rounds of games. This was one of the big reasons we got the WiiU, because a lot of its games deal with a socially interactive experience, something we love to do.
What is sad is that, with the PS3 and X360, there isn't that many local multiplayer games outside of Xbox Live Arcade games. I wish there was more.
