I assume we should be able to suggest games up until mid-late October, right? Since the first one is being announced a couple of weeks in advance of the tournament, I figured we could wait...mjmjr25 wrote:...multiple nominations are fine, sorta like putting more balls in the lottery.
I have a list at home - let's give it another week for everyone to submit nominations - then i'll post a public list of everything that's been submitted. Send via pm or post in thread, either is fine...
Racket STGT Nov. 2013 - COLUMBIAN HI-BALLERS teh CHAMPS!

Good idea for those like me who will be affected. As I said earlier, I'm already gonna be out the week of 2006-2010 due to those 2 issues, no matter what gets picked. So whatever wins there, I just hope my guys can do well in. Also hoping for something arcade-y for 2001-2005.SpoonyBard wrote:Might not be a bad idea to put a deadline for picks (end of the month maybe?) and then list them all. That way we can go through them and make sure we don't leave anyone out because of hardware limitations or lack of a good rom.

1990-1995: Gunbird
1996-2000: Guwange
2001-2005: DDP DaiOuJou (I don't know if this works in MAME, though.)
2006-2010: Star Soldier R (5 minute mode)
I'll throw these picks out there.
I hate to feel like I might be throwing a wrench into the process so late in the game here, but I wonder if it wouldn't be better to collectively compile a list of 60 games that are mostly 100% in MAME, and/or easily accessible otherwise, then randomly select four games from that list.

Yup, I like this idea. More randomness and surprise makes for a good, more fair STGT. A bunch of favorite/popular games and advance notice do not. In the three years I've done a tourney at shmups.org, I think there's only been 1-2 games that I had played with any seriousness previously.

DDP DOJ does indeed run in MAME now. And quite well.pierrot wrote:1990-1995: Gunbird

Nice choice on the Star Soldier R.
I'd be happy with a "5 Minute Caravan Mode" week
And to touch upon what dsh said, I'd also like to see the less commonly played/talked about games outweigh the more popular stuff
like Super-X

Now this I can get behind. We already have that big list on the shmups.org site linked here that has all those shmups in chronological order; it should be no trouble to find that many. Plus, as dsh pointed out, we're guaranteed something brand new and maybe unfamiliar like we had last year at their STGT. I never played Espgaluda, Salamander 2, Strikers 1945 III or V-V until that point. If a tester is needed to make sure our final picks run well, I can do it too.

I feel like we had this discussion last week...we voted...and were split down the middle.
If I had my druthers we'd pick all the games tonight so we could buy them. We have the same debate, but i'll state my perspective again, MAME compatibility is irrelevant to my preferences. I'm not the only one.

Just to be clear, I'm not arguing for MAME compatibility any longer, just randomness. I just don't want to see that every week someone on some team will have their "pet" game selected. By doing it based on suggestions, that's likely what will happen. I'd rather just have a big list of at least semi-randomly selected shmups that dictate what we play. The more obscure, the better, I tend to think.mjmjr25 wrote:I feel like we had this discussion last week...we voted...and were split down the middle.

I am not saying that we have to do this, it's just a perspective and a preference. I'll try to play whatever we decide to play however we decide it.

I'm definitely in the camp of MAME-haters, but I also see it as a great tool to play otherwise inaccessible games. My list was based on ease of emulation or cheapness of purchase.
Whatever is decided, I'll go with it.
