I always heard that the $2.15 an hour is to offset the taxes they would pay and bank the tips clean per week. I'm sure strip clubs work the same way right?
And no I don't lend games of any kind. I'm generous over everything else though, even money. I have no problems lending stuff like PC equipment, tools and such. I had a friend who was going through a rough time and gave him a laptop I barely used. I didn't want it back at all.
Are you overly generous?

Yeah I've been to plenty of places that have filled in my tip before or put an "suggested" tip. Even without that not tipping here is a stoning offence to some people. It is BS.Jmustang1968 wrote:Tipping is expected but not required (unless auto gratuity on large parties). Many people do stiff or give bad tips. Servers are paid less than minimum wage from their employers, they supplement that pay with tips received from customers.
Yes we know their initial pay is below minimum wage, but no matter what you make the federal minimum. So drop it, stop acting like you don't get paid like any other job.
Re: Are you overly generous?
Actually, the federal minimum wage for tipped workers is $2.13 an hour, or $5.12 below the federal minimum wage. I would rather all "mandatory" tipped positions be eliminated, but many local and chain restaurants would pitch a fit as it would cut into their meager profits and raise the cost of eating out. Then again, you could get away with not tipping. On the other hand, if restaurant servers were minimum wage, you'd probably get a lot more crappy service.KDub wrote:No, but your server isn't either.o.pwuaioc wrote: Are they paid less than minimum wage?
It's kind of a shit situation, no matter which way you look at it.

I usually tip %15-20 unless the service is crap. Seem to run into bad servers more and more often.
Sadly I have been getting more and more paranoid about where I eat ever since I started working at the prosecutor's office
. Literally 90% of the defendants I have encountered work in the fast food/restaurant industry and it seems like I meet employees from a new restaurant every day
. Kind of makes me worry about someone recognizing me and giving me a little "extra sauce" on my order
. Even though I am just an intern they don't know that
.
As far as lending games I don't do it often but when I do I usually just lend the games loose in a replacement case. Most of my friends are careful with the games themselves but many are quite a bit rougher with boxes/paperwork its not like they need them anyways

this thread was about something entirely different than what I thought it would be about
Re: Are you overly generous?
I think someone sprinkled a little too much butthurt in your cereal this morning. I'm saying that there is no need for ungrateful employees. There are enough unemployed veterans as well as civilians that could take those jobs and really appreciate what they have. Plus, whats better? Minimum wage or no wage at all? Hence unemployed.o.pwuaioc wrote:So you wish that our veterans should make the minimum wage, a currently non-liveable wage? Are you not thinking about the full consequences of your words, or do you just not care about other human beings?oxymoron wrote:I know they pay $13 ph here. I worked there in the summer as assistant cashier (box guy). I still don't think that low pay gives you the right to be a dick. If you don't like the pay then leave. Well, this has obviously stayed friendly.
Come on, guys. We can have a legit discussion on the subject of minimum wage and tipping without resorting to insults or harassment.

I am not a server anymore, that was a brief college job. Servers do get paid, but it will vary from night to night, and you can work some tables with little to no tip. This was more to dispute those who feel like they shouldnt tip. The 'oh, they will make minimum wage, so I shouldn't tip' idea is BS.KDub wrote:Yeah I've been to plenty of places that have filled in my tip before or put an "suggested" tip. You will pay the tip regardless. If employers are forced to pay a server min wage flat rate they will adjust by raising prices.

Re: Are you overly generous?
I've already covered this in a few posts back and linked to the Department of Labor page on it. In short if a worker does not make up the rest in tips the establishment still has to pay them the standard federal minimum wage at the time (right now 7.25, but if local is higher I believe they must pay you that). No matter what job you have in the US you can not make below the standard federal minimum wage.marurun wrote:Actually, the federal minimum wage for tipped workers is $2.13 an hour, or $5.12 below the federal minimum wage. One thing I have been accused of being overly generous about in the past is my buying practices at yard sales/flea markets
.
I usually pay asking price, and I have been known to pay extra if I run across an amazing deal. I come from a family of hagglers so they all kind of think I am insane
