Re: Are you overly generous?
Is tipping just an American thing? my sister spent a semester in Italy and she said no one tips there, its just not a thing. I'd be curious to know what other countries where tipping is expected.

Re: Are you overly generous?
There's some psychology working against abolishing tips. When a server gets tipped that's money in the pocket, whereas with a paycheck they need to wait for payday. Plus, if someone has one day where they get a fantastic amount of tips (super busy and everyone is tipping 20%+, or Frank Sinatra slips you a hundred) and now they see the potential of that happening every time, similar to that gambler's rush. But it's something that could be done; many European countries don't have a tipping custom.brunoafh wrote:My understanding of the whole tipping thing is that it's an archaic way of payment from dozens of years ago, that pretty much has no place in modern society, but for one reason or another hasn't been expelled yet and most places use it to their advantage to under pay employees. At the same time, at high end restaurants, employees can end up making a killing on tips. But in the big picture this is a rather small percentage of people, and the big piece of the pie is going to be your standard people at diners or Olive Gardens making very little.
We are almost definitely better off doing away with the tipping thing and just making it a standard wage position, but who knows if that will ever happen. In the current generation of server jobs being many peoples main option in this generation though, it needs to happen more than ever.

It's a free country?o.pwuaioc wrote: How dare you compare African salves to restaurant goers tipping. Have you no shame?
And when it comes to tips, I exclusively tip depeding on the service and how likable the person seems. I tipped an 11 year old boy for taking a picture of me with my camera just cause of how polite and hard working he was.
Yes and no. At least here they appreciate it if you tip, but most of the time they don't expect it. Not to mention most restaraunts are family owned/run, so tipping is really just adding a couple of extra € to their total income for that day.Is tipping just an American thing? my sister spent a semester in Italy and she said no one tips there, its just not a thing. No, but your server isn't either.o.pwuaioc wrote:Are they paid less than minimum wage?ninjainspandex wrote:should I be tipping the cashier at Walmart then?BoneSnapDeez wrote:[Because they are not making a liveable wage without tips. This is a simple concept.
Only as a "requirement". Most other countries have either never really had it or gotten rid of it a long time ago. It is always welcomed but it isn't "a part of their pay", just a gratuity (as the original use of the word, a thank you/a gift of gratitude).ninjainspandex wrote:Is tipping just an American thing?

Tipping is expected but not required (unless auto gratuity on large parties). Many people do stiff or give bad tips. Servers are paid less than minimum wage from their employers, they supplement that pay with tips received from customers.

In some respects, that's true. But then again, imagine the service you'd get if all servers acted like Wal-Mart cashiers.KDub wrote:No, but your server isn't either.

Maybe not Walmart but If they acted like Target or Costco cashiers I wouldn't mind.o.pwuaioc wrote:In some respects, that's true. But then again, imagine the service you'd get if all servers acted like Wal-Mart cashiers.KDub wrote:No, but your server isn't either.

Costco pays their workers over minimum wage. I haven't the foggiest about Target.oxymoron wrote:Maybe not Walmart but If they acted like Target or Costco cashiers I wouldn't mind.o.pwuaioc wrote:In some respects, that's true. I know they pay $13 ph here. I worked there in the summer as assistant cashier (box guy). I still don't think that low pay gives you the right to be a dick. If you don't like the pay then leave. There's enough unemployed vets to fill your job.o.pwuaioc wrote:Costco pays their workers over minimum wage. I haven't the foggiest about Target.

So you wish that our veterans should make the minimum wage, a currently non-liveable wage? Are you not thinking about the full consequences of your words, or do you just not care about other human beings?oxymoron wrote:I know they pay $13 ph here.
