Because it's not as good as everyone says it is?

FF7...

after mentioning how bored I was with it, I put in another 2 or more hours tonight. Invaded Shinra Tower (via stairs. I do this because it's so fucking stupid. I almost can't believe how dumb this part is. And I need to remind myself of it every time. Yeah. It just takes forever). I then beat the robot things on the elevator, and then (sigh) went through the motorcycle part which I think is terrible. I died on the boss after the motorcycle part though. Was having trouble figuring out which buttons on my controller corresponded to keyboards, so couldn't swap my Materia back in for that battle. Like I said, love/hate this whole game.

Most of your posts about the game seem to lean more towards "hate" than love... lol. I dunno, but it just doesn't seem like you have the best initial attitude going with the game, it'd be hard to imagine there will be much later on that changes your outlook on it. Who knows? Midgar is only like 10% of the game, maybe you'll enjoy it more when you get out. It's funny to hear you dying though, not that hard of a game haha...

Always wished Midgar was bigger myself though, lol. Also back on the pre-rendered maps thing... I guess I do recall Midgar was cluttered, that stuff never bothered me but I think afterwards the environments get easier to navigate.

Agreed. But hey, it's still a solid RPG.

My Atelier Totori Plus progress has been steady. Building the ship. Finally nearing my adventurer license renewal date. I wonder how long it takes to do the last portion of the game. I know you get two years, but how long does one really need?

No the game is not hard at all. Like I said, I basically died because I was ill-equipped against a boss battle. I didn't have any Materia equipped, so I had no spells.

But yeah, you're right. It prob does look like I hate it more than I love it. I probably do. There's so much I hate about FF7. But at the same time I have a lot of nostalgia for it. It wasn't my first RPG by a longshot. Wasn't even my first PS1 RPG (that was Suikoden). But I did spend a lot of time playing it in college. It was actually when I bought my second PS1 (or, rather it was a PSOne) and needed a single game to keep me busy for a while since I had pretty minimal disposable income.

And I do appreciate the importance the game had on the genre (in the West). Sure we can argue all day about better games, but when the pee-pee contest is over, there's really no denying that FF7 managed to make fans out of folks who had not touched RPG's prior. And beyond that, it def made the genre something that was far more recognized to folks that probably had no clue it existed before then. Like Chrono Trigger a console-generation before it, I think that FF7 is definitely a bit overrated. But as far as a gateway into the genre, well kids could have certainly picked far worse games to get hooked on.

And to be fair, there are things I like about the game. Strangely, I enjoy a lot of the story. I like... most of the characters. I like the Materia system. I think there's quite a bit of funny stuff in there as well.

SO I don't know, I guess it's a mixture of all this stuff, but I don't just straight out hate FF7. Not the way I straight out hate FF2. To me, 2 was a game I couldn't even enjoy playing. While 7 is a game I can have fun with even if I'm picking it apart.

Ohhhhhhhh, so this isn't your first time playing it?

By FF2, you mean FF2 NES I hope? Heh.

Funny enough it's the characters/plot I'd nitpick the most with FFVII. The more I replay it, the more I loath some of the stuff (Tifa / Cloud's mind part, cringe worthy). But yeah overall I still think it's just a really fun game and one I've gone back to several times, probably the most next to FFVI. Which... I can also nitpick nowadays. I guess in some cases the more you replay something, the more faults you end up finding or looking for.

Now that I know this isn't your first time playing it though, I'm kind of laughing at your thoughts now. I missed that part... so being in Midgar which is like a prelude to the full game, to me it looked like you just went in hating it from the start haha.

haha, nope. This is my... hmm... third or fourth time.

Well, it was the PSP port, but yeah the NES game. Sucks.
(Tifa / Cloud's mind part, cringe worthy).
Tifa > Aeris.

I think this is a good point!

I dug FFII (PSP). But yeah, not much to say about it overall. The leveling was kind of broken/funky, the NES version sounds like a real mess. I probably liked FFIII more (played this one NES via emulation), but it was still 98% dungeon crawling so I probably wouldn't recommend it if you didn't like FFII.

Also yeah, when Aeris kicks the bucket I was super happy the first time I played FFVII. Figured that meant more time for Tifa! lol
