No newer gen console will ever get a place in my heart. My first love was the NES, so my heart belongs to retro gaming.

That being said...I am fond of my PS3. I know if I lost it I would be quite sad. The things been with me ever since launch and it got me through a really painful point in my life where I had to excape the pain of real life in video games. I guess I would say it even helped save me.

I bought Mirror's Edge for it when it first came out, it looked amazing and it was pretty damn hard so I never ended up finishing it..until that painful point came along. Since it was hard it needed me to focus on it, so it was easy to forget about my problem...I beat the game and it was good for me to actually beat a whole game for once. I love that game now..it one of my favs because of how it helped me.

I guess I do actually love my PS3 now that I think about it...good and bad memories with it. So yeah I guess I do love a current gen console. I don't actually have a ton of games for it, since at the time I thought new PS3 games were way to pricy. I am now starting to pick up a small collection of good games and am always looking for good games for it (so if anyone knows of some good games...tell me). But one of the main reasons I really love my PS3 for is it plays PS1 and 2 games. Since I STILL can't find my old PS2...and my biggest game collection is for the PS2, it's a good thing. Three consoles in one...that's great.

PS3 for now. I just decided I was kind of sick about too many things on the 360 and beyond Halo, I'm not sure if there's many exclusives that I could care about at all (though I love Remedy and Alan Wake. Oh and I think Halo 4 kind of sucked and Destiny is taking over, so maybe I'm done with Halo too). Same thing happened last gen although not to such an extreme change of mind, but I focused more on the Xbox/GC early on... fast forward to now and I own 10 games for the Xbox/GC each, and like 60 for the PS2. It's clear as day that the PS2 dominated in the long run for me and it's pretty much permanently hooked up. Haven't touched the other two in years.

Now it's almost weird comparing this gen to the last since it's like, I've still only covered 10% of the PS2. Last gen hasn't ended for me! It's almost daunting. So many JRPG's and other niche' titles I need to check out and tons and tons of stuff from my ex-favorite devs like Capcom that I still haven't even gotten around to.

It gets weirder because of all these HD collections I've been all over lately. Where do I give the credit here? PS2? Haha... but there was so much I missed out on and these HD collections have been a saving grace for me. Nice upgrades, easier access, and just really convenient. I still think it's just not right to get most of them on the 360 when 90% of these games were PS2 exclusive. So the PS3 experience as of late has been a merger with the PS2. That makes no sense. But yeah, topped off with my massive MGS replay marathon this year, I just really feel like I'm chilling out in this weird PS2.5 limbo dimension.

There are dozens and dozens of Wii stuff I need to get and I know I'll love. In the end, I know the PS3 and Wii will leave a good mark. The Wii's library certainly looks way more awesome than the GC to me, heck maybe even compared to the N64 too (one I never go back to, despite all the nostalgia).

Overall, I think I'm in the process of finally not caring to keep up with the race and I'll stay behind, like a lot of others here. IE I have a huge wishlist on PS2/PS3/Wii games that could ideally keep me busy for years probably. I definitely don't like spending $60 on a new game anymore, maybe just a 1-2 time thing a year now, and yeah just most of the AAA stuff this gen has easily lost my interest. So I'm just slowing down and enjoying my own pace with things, doing more research/talking with people I trust, and yeah.

Um yeah, I think others hinted at this, but this gen won't be "ending" anytime soon for me at all.

I say this gen. is over because there probably will not be any big exclusives that are going to 360/wii/ps3 only. Most of the titles which are going to be released for the ps3/360 have been announced already, and I believe GTA5 is the last exclusive game for this generation . So I am not sure if 2014 is going to add any value to the ps3/360 , that is not going to be on the ps4/X1 too.

I am surprised that most people will be remembering handhelds, did not expect it. Maybe because this handheld generation was the first to bring graphics on par with a ps2 or higher level (no longer 2D only?) . Which brings my attention to the iOS. iPads and iPhones is probably be the thing I will remember. First time for me to experience touch screen gaming. I also experienced the simpler yet different games like Plants vs Zombies, The Room, LetterPress, Outwitters on the opposite of the usual fully fledged games on a tv console. The $1-$10 prices made games very accessible to me. The fact that my phone is also my gaming device made it a lot more convenient for me than carrying an extra device, or having to charge 2 devices. I also have not to worry about carrying mini-cds/cartridges around (I still remember Gameboy bags) . All the games are in the device, and if I would like a new game its a tap away by downloading it over the internet. Even better I can look up a video review on youtube within the same device.

Why is everyone making fun of the phrase "place in my heart" . Maybe I am losing my English skills...

I would go with the Xbox 360. The library on that is very diverse there are a bunch of fun games I've played on that and games I'll be playing way beyond the next generation. As a matter of fact I don't think I'll be joining up next generation other than the two handhelds that I own (I also do not want to invest into another console altogether for various reasons). I don't care about exclusives so much on the 360 other than Forza. I chose one platform and stuck with it. I even have a small collection of Xbox Original games that I never played so that will keep me quite occupied.

Maybe this is the rabid fanboy in me (I know he's in there, somewhere), but I don't think that's entirely true. We got plenty of what I would consider to be hardcore games from Nintendo themselves, even if none of the third-party guys really stepped up to the plate. Now, I do think that's partly because of the weaker tech, but it's not the only factor. I just think that Nintendo has had a hard time pulling in the hardcore (outside of their own titles) for a while now, and overcoming that reputation that has pretty much stuck with them since the SNES days (and greatly amplified in the N64 era) isn't easy.

At the same time, I'm not sure I completely blame the third-party folks for sticking with more casual fare, because many of the hardcore titles they put out on the system bombed badly. The audience just wasn't there for the Wii, and honestly, it wasn't there for the Gamecube either.

I don't know how they turn it around at this point. You can try all you like to change perceptions, but even if they were to try to go pure Sony / Microsoft, would you really want to? The Gamecube didn't exactly set the world on fire.

And I may have completely undercut my entire point. Did I have a point? I had to get up far too early this morning. I think I'll just leave with a partial disagreement: Nintendo didn't emphasize the hardcore as much with their system, but they themselves didn't abandon it completely, as we got some great stuff from them on the Wii. So maybe not "kiss my butt", but more a recognition of harsh economic realities.

...I'm just going to stop talking now. :P

Good. Most of the 7th-gen AAA action/shooter games that "hardcore gamers" ate up were quite shitty. I'm quite happy with the Wii and DS game libraries.

For me the 7th gen was all about handhelds. The DS and PSP totally outclassed the home consoles. And it was nice to see handhelds finally "catch" up in terms of overall game quality and system design.

Wii was my favorite home console. So many unique games and hidden gems.

PS3 and Xbox 360 feel somewhat interchangeable and are virtually tied. The 360 had the shmups but the PS3 had a slightly stronger RPG library.

We've been over this before: those are not hardcore games by any stretch of imagination. I'd post a pic where there are two 10-12 year old kids holding copies of Call of Duty for Xbox 360 with text "hardcore games for hardcore gamers", but I can't find it anywhere. Bunch of clueless ignorant children, that's what it is.
Anyway, Dark Spire, Expeditions Conquistador, CAVE SHMUPs, Super Meat Boy, Europa Universalis IV, Starcraft 2 (on a competitive level), Dark&Demon Souls. Those are some examples of games that could be classified as hardcore that were released during this console generation. Maybe even games like Arma 2, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II, XCOM: Enemy Unknown, Disgaea 4 and BlazBlue could be considered hardcore. None of those are AAA games, except SC2.
My WTB thread (Sega CD/Saturn games)
Also looking to buy: Ys III (TG-16 CD), Shadowrun (Genesis) Hori N64 mini pad and Slayer (3DO) in long box/just the long box

I am pleasantly surprised/impressed at the number of people including handhelds in this discussion. I didn't really expect that but I'm glad to see it.

Personally, I would have to say DS. For me it had the most memorable and unique experiences of any console. Don't get me wrong, I had some great experiences on the 360 and PS3 but if I had to pick just one it would be the DS.

I am entering the current generation in a 3DS/PC/WiiU set up so we will see what the future holds...
Have: Sega Genesis, SNES, Atari 2600, Atari 7800, Atari 800XL, PC, N3DS XL, Wii U, GBA, Xbox One, Switch

For people who are choosing handhelds, Is the DS and PSP considered this generation?

I understand the 3DS and Vita are very very different in games and power. So which is your choice

@Menegrothx

I think we need a clear definition of what hardcore and casual games are. Personally I call games that are Triple A and needs some videogaming-know-how hardcore. Games that you pick up and play made for the 6 year old and the grandpa to enjoy I consider casual. They usually have extra simple controls and the game is not complicated
