stripped screw on sega genesis 6 button controller.

I bought an original 6 button controller for the genesis. It was super dirty and buttons were sticky. I tried to open it up and clean it, but one of the screws is completely stripped (its pretty much a circle).

Any ideas? I tried hot glue gun and rubber band tricks.

If I can't get it out, I'm ok with breaking that screw and screw slot. What would be the best way to do that?

I don't plan on buy new tools and materials for this.

Carefully drilling the head off the screw just enough so you can pull it off and then use pliers to remove the shaft after the controller is apart and it is sticking up a mm or so.

which screw was it? I just took mine apart for cleaning and ran into this issue. There are 5 screws , 2 on each side and one in the lower middle.

The one on the lower middle of mine was stripped but when I undid the other 4, the case fell open. It seems like the 5th screw is just a dummy or something, maybe it's just mine.

Regardless, I agree with the response above, try to drill through the head

How bad is it? If you have a good arsenal of screwdrivers, usually you can find a flat head that's the perfect size to still bit in a stripped out phliphshead. That's what I always try first, and it works most of the time.

Did you strip the screw, or was it already like that? Working at the guitar shop, I've had so many things come in with stripped screws. I decided to start charging a fee to remove and replace them. It's so frustrating.

But here's the rule: Once the screwdriver slips out once, it's the wrong size. Stop trying, get a different screwdriver.

If you can't bite it with a flathead, then yeah, you'll have to drill it out. They make screw extractors, but the screws on those controllers are pretty small, I don't think they make the extractors that small. Drilling the head off is probably your best bet. Then you should be able to remove the screw shaft with pliers.

Pretty much the right idea, except you shouldn't need a typical extractor for a plastic tapping screw. A small sized left hand drill bit should grab into the head enough to spin it out.

Just turn down the drill rpms and one of those small bits should take it right out.

Oh, I wasn't aware of those. They're like reverse thread, so it'd work just like a screw extractor anyways.

The screw is the one on the top right.

I had a similar issue on a ps2 controller but I was able to bypass by just removing the other screw and the stripped screw just lifted open.

edit: I actually told the seller because he said it was in very good condition with only a few minor scratches and was cleaned. But it came dirty as hell, scratches everywhere, and had a stripped screw. He gave me 50% refund and let me keep it. It works fine. I just want to clean it.

The screw was already stripped when I got it. Pretty good too. Almost a perfect circle on the screw head. After I messed with it, I made it a perfect screw.

it's in there pretty good. Almost like it is molded or glued into the plastic.

I don't have any tools. Basic screwdriver. I got a mini Phillips head, medium, and a largest one. And only one flathead which is pretty big. Also got some security bit driver like the 360's t10 and Nintendo's try wing.
