Are you using the protection spirit? She can soak up damage for certain parts of the fight.

This is where Mirror of Fate takes cues from older Castlevania games. Some of the bosses are tough, like old school Castlevania tough, but there are tricks and patterns to them. I've seen guys on youtube beat them with no damage, which I could never do when I was playing the game.

There's one boss in the next chapter of the game (where you'll be playing as a different character) that drove me nuts for a while.

yeah I was using the protection spirit. But yeah, it just took me a while to figure out his pattern (and be able to react accordingly). Very fun game though. And you're right - "old school Castlevania tough." But fun.
