Are You a Geek?

Post by BurningDoom »

I ask this, because it's often assumed that gamers are geeks, but that's not always the case. Some gamers simply play video games but never get into other "geeky" stuff like D&D, comic books, or Star Wars.

If you are, what other kind of geeky stuff are you into?

Personally, I'm a HUGE comic book fan. I think most of you already know that, and my avatar kind of gives it away. I've read comics for as long as I can remember; I started on my dad's collection when I was real small (just looked at the pictures back then). I pretty much read mainstream DC & Marvel super-hero comics and follow both pretty closely, purchases several titles from each company each month. My favorite obviously being Green Lantern.

I'm also a big sci-fi geek. Movie/T.V. sci-fi geek. I used to read a lot of sci-fi novels when I was younger, but not so much anymore. I particularly love 80s sci-fi (Predator, Terminator, Aliens, Back to the Future, Ghostbusters, etc.), but I can enjoy good sci-fi from any era. And I really like Star Trek TNG & Voyager, Stargate: Atlantis, and Sliders.

And finally, I'm a horror movie geek. Not nearly as much as I used to be when I was younger, but I still check out scary movies from time to time. But I particularly focus on the gore era of the 70s and 80s. The bloodier and cheesier, the better. I really enjoy the Nightmare on Elm Street series, George Romero's "of the Dead" films, The Lost Boys, Night of the Demons, etc.

I'm a completely normal person with boring, normal tastes like football, BBQs and beer.

Games, anime, audiophile headphones, figures, the latest laptops/phones/whatever. Yea. I'm a geek. And perfectly fine with it.

You should change your location away from "Spain" before doing your American impression.

I find that any person who has a passion for anything is a geek. There are sports geeks who talk sabermetrics 'till the cows come home. There are wine geeks who spends their lives living through wine, recounting memories and feeling a cultural connection with the soil. There are geeks of every genre and of every flavor of life.

For me some of the many things I geek over are as follows.

Movies - I don't just watch movies, I devour them voraciously. I take the time to understand tone and purpose, shaping my opinions around what is intended and what is accomplished. I find love and joy from every genre and pick apart the viscera of these cinematic beasts with sheer voracity.

Video games - Take the same concept with movies and apply it with video games. I love taking apart the games, seeing the strange oddities of what was intended. You can find them change visions mid-game from moving towards one idea to another, or find them flow cohesively into a clear idea. Games have always been about enjoying them any way you can, be it translating D'ni text in the Myst series, getting high-scores and memorizing patterns in Pac-Man or just farting around in the Sims and for me, it is exactly that. What way can I enjoy a game and approach it that way.

Storytelling - I love to tell stories, be they fact or fiction. I love talking and weaving tales to entertain. One of the things that I am looking forward to most when being a parent is to tell my kids tales and help paint imaginative pictures in their minds by the sheer will of the spoken word. I love to write as well and want to work on interactive fiction, making text-based games that draw a player in with story and evoke curiosity. I guess in reality it is the desire to bring about emotion in a person, be it good or bad. I want to get people thinking, even if those thoughts are day dreams.

I'm not into anything "geeky" besides gaming but I do consider myself a part of the geek culture. I say that because I'm really into games. I love every aspect of them from top to bottom.

I enjoy animation. My two favorite shows are Beast Wars and the first three seasons of Spongebob. My two favorite animated movies are the Transformers movie and Rango. As for anime, I have much apathy, though I do love the two and a half Ghibli movies I've seen.
Another hobby of mine is tokusatsu, mainly Kamen Rider and Godzilla. This also extends to foreign adaptations like (most of) Power Rangers. This also makes up most of the toys I like (the other ones are Transformers and LEGO, though I've been less interested in it as of late).
Through tokusatsu I got into Japanese music. Malice Mizer is pretty much all I've been listening to for the past few months.
As for something I haven't fully gotten into, Star Trek has gotten me interested in sci-fi shows, but I won't watch any more until I finish Trek.
Insert clever quote here.
