Flash carts are fun on a bun.

Well it depends on your personal opinion and also how you plan on using the flash cart. Right, they're too expensive to be an impulse buy.

You can still put up the same real hardware versus emulation debate. If you use a flash cart, you're still using real hardware. Most of the time, there is absolutely NO difference between using a flash cart and using a real cart. A few exceptions apply, but most of the time it's the same exact thing.

I totally agree, I love owning original carts. There's actually been instances where I tried a game on my flash cart, found out I liked it, then picked up the real cart (and like I said, I'm able to transfer my saves from the flash cart to real cart so that works out nicely). But that's where the "are you a collector or a gamer" debate comes in. For some one that just wants to play the games, and on real hardware, that person wont care if they're playing them from a flash cart or a legit cart. If you consider how large and expensive the SNES library is, a flash cart is just more cost effective. Even if you only want to play the best of the best SNES games, those games cost at least as much as one flash cart. Probably more.

Then there's fan translations and game hacks/mods. Even if you're hell bent on playing only legit carts of officially released games, there's still good reasons for a flash cart. There's tons of great fan translated games out there. Then there's hacks and mods and unreleased games. Sure, you can get "repro" carts, but I've already put up my repro versus flash cart debate enough times. I'll just point out that 2 or 3 SNES repros should be enough money to buy you an Everdrive instead, and you're better off with one.

I will agree that if there's one console worth getting a flash cart for it's the SNES. So many JRPGs with fan translations and so many platformers with romhacks.

I threw in Top Gear 2 for my 2-year-old son to play while my wife and I finished our breakfasts. After I showed him that the X button accelerated the car, he was set. He couldn't figure out how to steer; so, he bounced off the objects on the side of the road. Even though he DFL'ed all of the races, he still had a great time, however. (I also had fun playing back through all of the Australia courses after finishing my coffee. It is such an easy, fun racing game...and it also available for the Amiga CD32...get on that Bone!)

Ziggy587 wrote: I believe the SNES had more games that saved progress than the NES and Genesis, but yeah, it's a retro console. There were plenty of games that used password systems instead of saving game progress. That's just the way it was back then. Calling it archaic sounds a little weird though.
That system doesn't with me well , except like when you get a password to start a level like Doom. I remember in FF6 you had to walk long walks just to save your progress. I really do not like having to repeat what I did already in the game. For instance if I beat a boss , then for some reason I couldn't save or the save was before meeting the boss, I do not want to face that boss again and beat again because of the saving system. This is fixed on ROMS with the save state.

Umm... what?
Sorry I keep making errors while I type. I meant to say that system is old (discontinued 16 years ago?) so finding one that is in a good condition is not an easy process. You will never know when something will break. Maybe it is easier for you in the US, but here it costs me a lot to find replacement parts. I have to pay at least $15 for almost each item I ship. So 3 games are $45+games price. Not to mention the 2-3weeks wait.

FF6 took you two months, so you're saying all SNES games are brutal because of that? And you're saying all games today are over in 12 hours? And you're saying Aladdin on the SNES is unforgiving?

FF6 is an RPG, and yeah, they usually take a while to beat. Most RPGs today are longer than 12 hours. SNES games can range from taking a short time to complete to taking dozens of hours (mostly just the RPGs). Some games are easy, some games are hard. Just like games do today. Nothing has changed there. So I really don't understand what you're saying.

Aladdin is unforgiving? If you were to say Ninja Gaiden on the NES is unforgiving, I'd say OK. But Ninja Gaiden and Aladdin aren't even in the same ball park.
I have a different opinion. I have no problem with completing current games today. But anything pre-64 was damn difficult. I can't remember games that I beat on 16-bit and older. I had every cheat ON using an emulator with EarthWorm Jim and I still couldn't complete the final level. in Aladdin, you do your best only to reach the final stage with 2 lives and you then lose them because of surprising events like lava firing in unexpected places. Then you have to start from 0. Batman & Robbin for Genesis I had infinity lives on, couldn't believe any one could complete this game with no cheats. In The Lion King ,I still do not know how the level after "Can't Wait to be King" looks like. I still didn't complete the Super Mario Bros. Ghosts and Goblins .

Maybe I am bad at them, but those 8/16-bit games were damn difficult. I did complete Sonic though after long patience and concentration of 3.5 hours and save states and cheats I believe.

have you thought that maybe you just suck at platform games mate?

It's not a shame mind you. I suck at most FPS games. Counter Strike is not hard. I'm just terrible at it

Earthworm Jim really is a hard platformer. If it didn't have that health bar, I probably wouldn't have made it past the 2nd level.

I played it on the Genesis, though, I don't know if that makes a difference in difficulty or not.
