Best free webhosting service?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

Best free webhosting service?

Post by BoneSnapDeez »

Yeah this is one of those "let me Google that for you" questions and I should know the answer as an aspiring web programmer... But I want to know what you guys think.

Basically, I've had access to the University of Maine System servers for 13 years now to build sites that are academic in nature. But now I'd like to build a personal site and I'm a bit stumped. I loved Geocities back in the day, but it seems to have died some time ago. *sniffle* I also remember using Angelfire and Tripod when I was in high school, but I'm sure much has changed since then.

I'm mainly looking for a service that doesn't try to spoon-feed you with a bunch of templates and crap - I can write my own code. I also don't want ads everywhere. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I think Google has some sort of service.

Most people who are looking for freebies are using blogger.com or wordpress.com -- Wordpress at least is very customizable.

I will say that I pay for unlimited/reseller account with Dreamhost and am very happy with it. I've got a number of friends, online and real life, hosting their domains with me. I generally go with a "pay what you want" model there, as I'm going to keep paying for the hosting regardless of who else is using it. Works out well for all parties involved. Feel free to drop a PM if you're interested.

With Google, you're working around it's app, but there are guides online to make it work.
I'm still using my ISP's webspace. PNGs compress well.

I have a few domains/websites of my own and also help hosting someone else's site. In this day and age it's so easy and cheap to just buy a domain and build a website that it's really hard to recommend any free service where you're stuck with a http://www.notyoururl.com/~username/ -type of address. Also looks better to have a domain of your own if you're planning to put your CV up there for potential employers to look at.
