Preference on Collecting?

Post by Frag Mortuus »

Hey Guys,

I have been looking through a lot of posts in the "Game Rooms & Home Theater" section and LOVE checking out everyone's stuff. Some folks on here have outright HUGE collections. While others seem to have a handpicked and more modest collections. Some folks like to try to acquire complete collections by buying every game for a system or every iteration and variant of the console itself. While others will only buy games they know they will play. Then there are others that want to collect games of certain genre's.

I personally never really considered myself much of a collector of games. I just like to play them. So, I only keep games I enjoy. If I buy a game, play it, and don't like it, I will sell or trade it. But, if I enjoy it I keep it. So, I can get a system and only really have a handful of games for it.

What I do like to collect are gaming memorabilia. I used to be a sucker for collector's edition games. But they just got too much. They became super expensive and it seemed like every game had it's own collectors edition. I just got burned out. But, then you have things like the Zelda Collector's Guides and the subsequent box set that is coming out. In which there will be one print run and then they will be gone (supposedly) for good. I really, REALLY love the super nice gaming statues that you can order online, but are way too expensive for me to afford. Those are the things I enjoy collecting when I get the chance.

So what is your all's approach to collecting?

I actually enjoy collecting consoles as much as I like collecting games. Once I obtain a particular console I shoot for the best games (in my opinion) for the system. I don't want to own games that I wouldn't enjoy playing so I don't go for complete system sets or anything like that.

I also collect series..... Trying to complete Final Fantasy, Ys, Dragon Slayer, Legend of Heroes, and a few others right now.....

When it comes to games I collect in two main areas:
1. Games that look to be right up my alley
2. Games I played growing up
Granted most of my collection is Nintendo or PC focused so that makes it alot easier to cut out alot of stuff.

Though when you expand into other parts of gaming, like store displays and feelies, I adopt more of a "does it look cool?" mantra. For example, I have one large store display, the giant Gamecube cubes, because they were in the store I used to work at. But they are also really cool towering over things - the setup is over six feet tall. Where I am going to store them, well thats a damn good question...

I never thought about that, but I do enjoy getting series as well. Legend of Zelda, Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and such are great to collect. I've seen people get entire series and some memorabilia and put each set on its own display shelf. Which I really like. I may do that when I finally get a space for a game room.

This is great too. I used to work at Gamestop years ago and I had tons and tons of really cool store displays, but realized it is hard to get a space to display them all properly.

I realized that after taking home a dozen of them. I actually found some two years ago in my parents attic - Mega Man Network Transmission, Star Wars Galaxies, and Pokemon Crystal, and sold them at a convention for quite a bit of money. Galaxies went for $50, MMNT for $70ish, Pokemon Crystal for over $100.

I have smaller things that I like and will keep, like the PSO 3d popout display, but most of the big stuff is getting/has been sold. Other people will enjoy it more than I will.

This and only this. There are precious few games in my collection that neither I nor my wife enjoy playing. I also tend to collect pretty stupidly. I will research a ton, including reading reviews and watching Youtube videos, until I come across it, usually on RB or in a Game Store nearby. Then I let it sit, because I have no time to play the hundreds of games I have amassed. Then, when I finally get around to playing it, I try to either write down thoughts on it if I like it or I sell it if I don't. The worst thing I'm doing is funding the USPS.

Different strokes for different folks everybody have their own collecting preference. For me and I can't talk for everyone have been collecting since I was a kid back in the early 1990s it started small and was primarily Nintendo centric. As time went on and getting a job I was no longer limited by money. I prefer to try and complete a set as the thrill of collecting is always having to hunt for that elusive game. That and well when I have a goal in mind no matter the situation will try to accomplish it without taking too much of a hit in the wallet.

Fortunately for me a lot of the games that have recently shot up in price in my collection I bought for a few bucks so I usually made out like a bandit just being street savvy pays in spades a recent addition to my collection is a brand new hot slots for the panesian game that I bought for 1$ and well you know it is worth well above that. Stay hungry and alert and you will have a collection that you will be proud of :D.

I don't care much about collecting games, so I just buy whatever I want and sell if/when I'm done with it. I've been doing this this way since I was about 10. Money was really limited back then! Through that method I've built up a small library of really good games for a number of systems with no particular collection goal in mind. Lately I've been buying more new games and systems, which have a lower resale value as soon as I open them up, but I'm pretty sure I'll be keeping them anyway. It's a great year for gaming.

The only system I've ever made an effort to build a library for is my PSP. I really like that system, so one day I just decided never to sell a PSP game I liked. That hasn't stopped me from buying digital when it's a really good deal.

That's basically my collection as well.

The only other thing I sometimes like to collect are games that I feel have some historical significance like genre starters and stuff, though for the most part I don't own anything I wouldn't actually want to play.
