Why do video game characters hate animals so much?

Developers just know what people want, it's human nature - give the player a weapon in an enviroment populated by various forms innocent wildlife and they're guaranteed to try killing them. Has anyone ever seriousley played Far Cry without hacking pigs to death with the machete? Zelda without iritating chickens? Black & White without beating the crap out of your pet?

However, the best abuse of wildlife in a game yet has to be Postal 2. How many other games let you collect neighbourhood cats then fire them off the end of your gun?

Heh, it'd have been cool if there was some sort of hunting minigame in that. It'd be a nice change of pace after all the "go to X, take Y" "go to X, make Y explode" "go to X, kill Y" missions.

And it's not so much that video game characters hate animals, it's that given the chance most people will kill anything that moves, including animals.
