Sadly not. I haven't played either of those before, they're on my list though. I heard Secret of the Stars wasn't great but it looks fun.
Thanks though, that's along the right track, with those types of combat systems. Still ticked it wasn't Phantasy Star II.

Re: Help recalling an RPG!
Okay....
SNES and Genesis.
I'm looking only at traditional turn-based JRPGs, as you seem to think it was that kind of game (not a strategy RPG, action RPG, WRPG, roguelike, etc)...
Eliminated:
Phantasy Star II
The 7th Saga
Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest
Lufia
Lufia II
Secret of the Stars
Paladin's Quest
I'm also eliminating any games that don't have a "short walk to the a final boss that kinda resembles Dark Force".
Remaining possibilities:
Breath of Fire II
EarthBound
Phantasy Star III
Phantasy Star IV
Sorcerer's Kingdom
If it's not one of those I'm stumped... Either that or the boss you're thinking of is not in fact the final boss.

Re: Help recalling an RPG!
Nah it's none of those.
Thanks for all the help all, I'll have to look through RPG Shrine for images to see if anything sparks my memory, or else my memory may have been warped since it's been so long. I did always believe it was Phantasy Star 2 I had played. One of those things that's going to nag at me a little bit until I solve it.
BoneSnap, you have a great list of SNES RPGs. Do you happen to have a list of Genesis or NES RPGs as well, or know where I can get one?

The lists on GameFAQs are decent. They were actually my #1 resource when I created that SNES RPG list.KoLAddict wrote: BoneSnap, you have a great list of SNES RPGs. Do you happen to have a list of Genesis or NES RPGs as well, or know where I can get one?

One thing to keep in mind with GameFAQs: strategy RPGs (like, say, the Shining Force and Langrisser games) are listed under the Strategy section (along with pure strategy games like Aerobiz, Populous, etc) instead of the RPG section. So getting a complete list of RPGs takes a little legwork.
