Yeah, but the alternatives right now don't point to tolerance gaining momentum. On the contrary, Assad goes down, fundamentalist groups would be the first ones in line to take over.Pulsar_t wrote:And Kurds and Alawites potentially as well, which is why the majority has to show civilised tolerance towards those minority groups if the country has any future after the possible collapse of the fascist regime.jfrost wrote: In the case of Syria, probably more people would die and, as you guys might know, the Christians of the country would probably be prosecuted should the opposition gain strength.

It does seem to be poison, though, whatever its purported uses are. I mean, leukemia and birth defects are much higher in the attacked portions of Iraq. In any case, if the problem with Assad is chemical weapons, you got a similar problem right there.Gunstar Green wrote:Because that's not exactly the same thing. There's controversy surrounding its use and arguments back and fourth about its safety but depleted uranium is considered legal for military use. It's not used as a poison, it's a very dense metal used for armor and armor piercing/high-kinetic damage rounds.The US has used depleted uranium in missiles in Iraq. I don't see as much commotion.
A lot of the concerns are more environmental than humanitarian anyway.
Re: So the Islamic world is kind of falling apart...
Your statement reminds me of the "War on Terror". It's none of our business to be there but we still are. Our country is going to shit and were spending millions upon millions to fight someone else's war. After close to 13 years we're doing peace talks with the enemies. It's hard to believe that a country like ours with the biggest and best army in the world can't take out a bunch of illiterate terrorists.BoringSupreez wrote:Honestly, I don't want us to get involved at all. This really has nothing to do with us unless we make it that way.
Anyways, America has always been the police of the world. If they don't get involved it gets people questioning they're authority. The middle eastern countries don't involved because they don't want to potentially step on America's toes. This excludes oil rich countries as they have America by the balls. If America doesn't lead the situation then people will look to others for authority and that's not good for Americas ego.
Re: So the Islamic world is kind of falling apart...
I think you're speaking in a lot of absolutes. There are a few obligations that have become salient as a result of becoming the sole superpower in the world, whether or not it's "our business". We have an obligation to the world to call attention to human right abuses, and act on them as long as we do it in accordance of international law. And I think you're equating less resources to illiteracy. Believe it or not, those who wish to conduct terror attacks are often very educated and connected, but engage in active insurgencies because they can't wage a war fought through a traditional front. Unfortunately, we've operated under terrible logic of "The enemy of my enemy is my friend" and it's come around to hit us in the ass.oxymoron wrote:Your statement reminds me of the "War on Terror". America has often been perceived as and in many ways has been imperialist in its foreign policy. I hate to critique your point of view but I see so many generalizations and assumptions in your last paragraph. We don't get involved in the human rights abuses in Africa, yet our authority isn't called into question. Authority isn't the issue here, rather we should be concerned more about our credibility and integrity. Unfortunately, our engagements in foreign policy support the notion that we've been too intrusive or self-serving, rather than helpful. We clearly have exerted authority and it's lent to weakened credibility on whether we're acting on behalf of others. Given the problems that exist in the Middle East stem from deeply rooted histories in so many different lenses, it's best we take a cautious approach this time around. We've been too callous since the Spanish American War.

TTYTT I think this is just a distraction to take our attention away from our domestic problems such as the NSA scandal, Monsanto, etc. Think about it. When has America ever given a rats ass about Muslims? I don't mean to rant but It doesn't make any sense. The media and government knows what tugs at the hearts of Americans. Innocent women and children dying in chemical attacks by their own country would tug on the heart of any sane human being and the fact that it's relevant makes it the perfect distraction. Just like Blu said there are many many other places where this kind of stuff is happening. So why Syria? I think it's time we worry about our self's and others later. I just want to my country to return to its legacy.

I think you got our facts wrong. America had a major role in establishing and has always been bff's w/ Israel. They were allies w/ Israel in the six-day war. So that would be against Muslims not with.o.pwuaioc wrote:Every year since June 1967.oxymoron wrote:When has America ever given a rats ass about Muslims? There are tons of active cases where the government is is screwing over there own people.
Re: So the Islamic world is kind of falling apart...
Better off to the people as a whole... For example , (and this is as far as I know) had trains during the King's era. After "democracy" 60 years later they are still using the SAME trains built in the era of their king. So much for prosperity after the king's evil reign . I also heard during the era of Iraq's king, each Iraqi had a free piece of land gifted to him as part of his "rights" . You all know how Iraq is today. You can also look at Iran in the days of the Shah and see how it turned out after it got the "democratic" treatment .
@jFrost
I live in this part of the world and news channels have Syria on 24hrs a day. There has no mention of attacking Christians or Christians attacking any one else. They are basically out of the war equation.
Alawaites though is a different story. Some people say its not true, but the truth is the war is a Sunni-Alawaites war.

If you understand what I said correctly, than you didn't explain your question clearly. Reread and try again. Be specific.oxymoron wrote:I think you got our facts wrong. Also, I asked about chemical weapons. And quit with the hyperbole and generalization when people ask for specifics.

When has the USA ever really given a genuine damn about the well being of Muslims? Rephrased it for you.If you understand what I said correctly, than you didn't explain your question clearly. Reread and try again. Be specific.

I'm sorry, I should have explained myself better when I asked the 'why Syria' question but pertaining to what you specifically asked, I can't name anything of the top of my head.
