Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
Correct me if I'm wrong, but cinematography is the art of movie photography. While all movies must be photographed, it's often not the focus of the production. In other words, cinematography is just one part of the movie-watch.

Why do you think it is called film? The primary focus of any movie is to be photographed, other wise it would not be a movie.Valkyrie-Favor wrote:Correct me if I'm wrong, but cinematography is the art of movie photography. Is cinematography just one part of a movie? Yes. But isn't "gameplay" just one part of a video game? They're both the core components that actually define their genre, but they also have other complimentary attributes via audio, visual effects, plot, characters etc.

Ttytt as long as the person understand what I'm trying to say idc. If the person doesn't understand then I'll take another 2 seconds to go into further description of what I mean. If i'm having a deep and intellectual conversation then I'd break down the single aspects of what I mean by "gameplay". Simple.

Gameplay is all of a game an movie-watch is all of a movie. Cinematography should be compared to coding, not playing.Violent By Design wrote: Why do you think it is called film? The primary focus of any movie is to be photographed, other wise it would not be a movie.

I've never seen anyone say "wow, this game has great coding!". I've seen plenty of people say movies have great cinematography.

Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
I meant that cinematography is the essential part of making a movie, but it's not the whole of watching one.
People do talk about a game's coding, but most of them are coders. Non-coders also talk about it, but all they can say is "it runs well," "it runs badly," or "That must have been some genius coding!"

Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
So, you can't make a movie without recording it. Without cinematography. Whether a recording of two people talking counts as cinematography is beyond me, but I do know that it's the art of pointing cameras really, really well. And also the art of scene composition. Or something. This is why I compared it to coding. Coding is the essential part of making a video game. Can't have a game without game logic.
When you're watching a movie, the way the camera is used is a big part of the experience. But not the whole experience. There's sound, there are ideas, there's acting and set work and plenty of other art-things that the cameraman probably had nothing to do with which can't be included in cinematography.

I don't mean to belittle this debate but if you think the word "gameplay" isn't sufficient for your conversation then use something else.

Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
That's pointless, since it's other people using the word that bothers me.
It's fine if you belittle the debate too. Just not a person.
