Another thing I found funny, and I wish I could find the article, was it talking about a black metal artist who hated Christianity, blah blah blah, and tried as hard as possible to hate and avoid anything related. Yet Tolkien was one of the band's main lyrical bases.

Tolkiens work has nothing to do with christianity even though Tolkien was a devout catholic. Practically all great artists, inventors, scientists etc of history are by modern standards racist, homophobic, misogynistic, antisemitic etc yet people who oppose those ideals don't feel guilty about using electricity/cars/modern medicine/computers etc. Look at the opinions of America's founding fathers. They're held in high regard even to this day, even though the noble ideals of freedom and liberty they spoke of were mostly meant for WASPs (white protestants from England&North and Central Europe).

One should also keep in mind that back then being an atheist wasn't as easy. Many people who didn't believe in God still pretended to be religious to avoid persecution/being ostracized. That wasn't the case with Tolkien, but when speaking of historic figures and religiosity in general, that's something to keep in mind.

No no no, I think you misunderstood. He was one of those Varg level ones that argued against anything Judeo-Christian or "Abrahamic". He was a huge hypocrite, and that's why I thought it was funny.

Well with out seeing the actual article I can't really judge this particular case. Just saying that it's a general misconception. Just because you're intolerant or hate/dislike some particular idea/religion/culture/group of people, doesn't mean you hate every single individual of that group or that you can't appreciate or enjoy the achievements made by people belonging to that group. So even if Tolkien was a devout christian, that doesn't mean that people who aren't christian or who despise christianity can't enjoy his works, because they have nothing to do with the religion.

I think you'll have a harder time finding black metal musicians who don't like Tolkien. Hell, look at Varg himself. "Burzum" is taken from Tolkien's black speech, specifically from the inscription on the One Ring itself.

It's not about that, it's about whether it's appropriate for a person with antichristian views to enjoy a book written by a christian.

I've been meaning to give that album another real listen. I've only listened to it once while on a drive and once while playing Counter Strike: GO. I think I didn't give it the credit it deserved in the post I made earlier this year. I've had a couple of the songs (namely Seven Days of May, Face in the Sky, and Malpractice) stuck in my head for a while now.

Souls of Black is decent but their original sound was starting to get pretty stale at that point.

Eh, I think that Practice What You Preach was where Testament started getting stale.

The New Order is my favorite Testament album.

I actually liked their album Demonic but that's because im more into Death/Black metal
