Speaking of horror movies, I've been kicking around concepts for a reboot of the Elm Street series, which IMHO is much superior to the so-so effort from a few years ago.

Basically, I start off with the first film pretty much starting with Freddy Krueger's murder trial and ending with the verdict, while also fleshing out all the events leading up to the trial. It's basically non-linear storytelling used to revamp the origin of Freddy Krueger (whose human form for the first two films is played by Norman Reedus). The second film picks up just after the first film ended and shows the aftermath of the trial's outcome and ending with Freddy's end at the angry mob. By the third film is when we get into the nitty-gritty rebooted mythos, with a set of rewritten rules and logic.

First off, Freddy HAS no defined form in the dream world, so if you wanna see a burn victim in a Christmas sweater slicing teens with a set of finger knives, you'll be sad to know that THAT Freddy has no place in my reboot. In lieu of this, Freddy is more of a "presence" in the dream realm. He also has his own rules, laws, logic and agenda. In essence, my Freddy's more of a creepypasta-style entity, and it shows.

And speaking of creepypastas, I'd love to do a Jeff the Killer film, but only if I can get this guy to play Jeff:



And to the haters I have six little words for you: AnnaSophia Robb as Jane the Killer.

But the overall premise of the movie I found dumb.

I think I'll watch this Cabin movie with my gf. You guys haven't let me down yet on movies recommendations (all 2-3 of them).

@BurningDoom: being upset that you couldn't take Cabin seriously is as silly as *cough* someone being upset he couldn't see the humor in the first Nightmare on Elm St.

But seriously, surprised you weren't into it. You generally have pretty good taste in horror movies - especially shlocky fun ones like Return of the Living Dead. I'd think this would be up your alley.

I think my problem is with movies that can't decide to be serious, or be tongue-in-cheek. Because I do love movies like Return of the Living Dead, Idle Hands, and Shaun of the Dead. But I wasn't too impressed with Cabin Fever. And I felt the same way about the Evil Dead movies (not counting the remake, because I haven't seen it yet); which also seem to walk that line between serious and ridiculous.

And the original Nightmare on Elm street was pure horror. It was the sequels that threw in the humor. But I'm a huge Nightmare fanboy, so I like them all, even the admittedly bad ones like Nightmare 2.

Sorry but I think that sounds horrible. So your entire first movie will be a trial? Do you not think fans of horror and friday 13th movie would want a horror movie and not a trial?

Yup, it's a movie you would expect to see on TBS on a Saturday morning...and love it.

Playfully but carefully written, excellent casting, and all around a great popcorn date flick.

I worked at the movie theater when that film came out, and it outlasted every other film of that summer in terms of length of its run.

Yup, it's a movie you would expect to see on TBS on a Saturday morning...and love it.

Playfully but carefully written, excellent casting, and all around a great popcorn date flick.

I worked at the movie theater when that film came out, and it outlasted every other film of that summer in terms of length of its run.

I worked at a Record/Video store when the VHS was released and we couldn't keep it in stock. It sold like gangbusters.


Anyway, I've recently been exploring the films of the Grindhouse Releasing cannon. Think Criterion Collection for "bad" (see also: awesome) films. Namely: Pieces (a fantastically gory chainsaw murder whodunit? set in a Boston University), Cannibal Ferox, and Cannibal Holocaust. (guess what kind of movies they are )
Next month An American Hippie in Israel is playing at a local art cinema, and I'm really looking forward to seeing it.

I said that the trial would be interspersed with flashbacks revealing the events leading up to it. I never said it wouldn't be a horror film. In fact, it'd be more flashbacks than trial. If you ever saw the movie "Dahmer", where Jeffrey Dahmer was played by a then-kinda-unknown Jeremy Renner, then basically I'd do with Freddy that they did with Dahmer, albeit with tweaked pacing (Dahmer was all over the place in a chronological sense) and a solid framing device (the trial).

The first film would be more of a dramatic thriller, showing how the man became the monster (hint: his mom's NOT a nun who's raped by a hundred asylum patients and he is NOT a pedophile). And the trial would not make it a courtroom drama, but rather just the tent that houses the media circus. And just to let you know, by the time Freddy sets foot in that courtroom, you'll practically WISH he looked like a burn victim in a discarded sweater and thrift-store fedora.

In other words: scarification. That's all I'll say there.

The second film would eschew the dramatic element, while retaining the thriller aspect. To him, his trial's outcome means nothing. Why give up now? He's not in prison or a padded room, and there's still potential victims out there. That's his logic, and he knows it. But naturally so does everyone else. While the bodies pile up, we see how the law enforcement and the general public deal with it (SPOILER: Freddy's lawyer blows his brains out). And it goes without saying he gets killed by the angry mob, though I'm swapping out the chosen method from the original and remake (i.e. being burned alive in his boiler room), but he WILL burn.

The third film is basically where Freddy's now the supernatural entity that stalks his victims in their dreams. The dream world has its own physics, logic, science, and so on. Freddy himself also has his own bylaws, many of which are carried over from his living-world time, such as his unwillingness to kill handicapped children. And taking a page out of Slenderman's playbook, Freddy also has select individuals who do his will in our world, a la The Proxies.
